This itinerary starts in Auckland and then takes you through some of the most photogenic spots of the North Island. After 6 days you will need to catch another flight from Auckland to Christchurch on the south island and pick up your second rental car.

There are a number of detailed maps of New Zealand you can use for your travel research. The listed PDF map will give you a clear overview of major towns, cities, roads, rivers and lakes. Great for getting a general overview of New Zealand.

Beside using road maps having access to walking and hiking maps is important. Most travellers to New Zealand will not just drive from A to B, but want to stop and enjoy the scenery. There are so many short walks along the main routes. Therefore, we do recommend to check out the Department of Conservation online library.

I use google maps for an idea how long I'm going to spend in Auckland traffic on the way home from work. I find it to be very accurate. This is not necessarily true once you get out on the country roads.

In our 2-month visit, we found google maps to be extremely helpful, especially as you can operate in offline mode. Generally speaking, the driving times were accurate except in a few situations where there were many vehicles, especially campervans and busses. We are experienced drivers on twisty and dirt roads, but we don't speed. We also enjoyed having a good paper map (ours was called an "adventure map" and it was easy to pick out some of the places we were planning to visit. it even showed some of the major hiking trails). The paper map really helped us plan our trip, select alternatives in bad weather, etc.

Just south of Lake Moeraki is the scenic Knigts Point Lookout with great views of the Haast area coastline and the Tasman Sea. The viewpoint was built in 1965 when the road from the glaciers to Haast opened. So the road opened first in 1965?

We arrived at Haast in the evening and continued our journey the next morning so there was no time for more activities than a walk on Haast Beach, along a side road to the fishing village of Jackson Bay (36 km south).

The below road trip itineraries connect a trip ending in Wellington to a trip on the South Island. You can use these itineraries to create an epic New Zealand road trip itinerary that includes BOTH islands!

The next route from south to north that connects both islands heads up the stunning West Coast. This journey takes a little longer to complete as it heads through the windy roads between Punakaiki and Nelson.

I'm coming to NZ next week and will be doing a lot of driving around the south island. I am hoping to rely on google maps on my iPhone as my GPS to navigate everywhere. Is this feasible, and if so, which phone providers would you recommend? (I would also like to be able to use google maps/GPS just for ease of finding things around the towns i'm in. And of course have data coverage to check in on facebook, email, instagram every so often. Texting Australia would also be good).

Great blog! I will be traveling to New Zealand in January and had a couple questions. Our plan is to do a camper van for 3 weeks for our stay there for both north and south islands. Do you think it is necessary to do the camper van or are there parts where you would recommend a car be fine because of costs? How much did you end up spending in gas? Any info on the ferry and if you should take your vehicle across or rent when get to the other side? Thanks for all your help!

About an hour drive from Nelson, on the southern edge of Abel Tasman National Park lies the Split Apple Rock. On a small rocky island in the water, about 50 meters from a beautiful sandy beach sits an almost perfectly round rock (just like the Moeraki Boulders), except that it is clean-cut in half. A short swim and a climb gets you on the rock and presents the opportunity of taking a funny photo of you doing a split in the middle of the Split Apple Rock.

Only 400 people live on the island in one small town called Oban, and there are only 28 kilometres of drivable road. Putting that next to the fact that the island has 245 kilometres of hiking tracks and that 85% of the island is covered by the Rakiura National Park shows you how serious they are about nature here. The most popular hike here is the 3-day Rakiura Track, another one of the nine Great Walks.

Wow what a great blog and amazing pics, really enjoyed it. We were planning a 10N NZ road self drive in April. Initial plan was to cover both islands after landing in Auckland. After reading your wonderful tour I realise it would be woefully short. Is it possible to cover north island highlights like geothermal rotorua in 2 or 3N and head to south island for east 8N, if so what are the highlights one can cover in SI?

Thanks again!

The South Island trip begins in the North in Picton, where the interisland ferry docks, and ends in Queenstown, a major city with an international airport. This trip includes the most enjoyable filming locations and passes through some amazing South Island scenery.

An alternative would be to take a scenic flight.

The South Island of New Zealand wine country, which in addition to its breathtaking beauty provides everything that nature has to offer, also has excellent wines. So, most of New Zealand's vineyards are on the southern island.

Hi Melissa, this long-read was really helpful for our planning of the 10-day journey across the island. The only thing bothering me is that we are flying into Christchurch and departing from Queenstown. Shall we simply do our road trip in the reverse direction? Thanks

If you are limited in time for you road trip in New Zealand, you should select only one of the islands. But which one is better?
