The Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT) is one of the remote sensing payloads aboard the Aditya-L1 mission of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), launched on September 2, 2023. Designed for both full-disk and targeted observations, SUIT captures near-simultaneous images of the Sun at multiple atmospheric heights—spanning the photosphere to the chromosphere—using 11 scientifically calibrated filters (3 broadband and 8 narrowband) covering wavelengths from 200 to 400 nanometers. Operating from the first Lagrange point (L1), SUIT can observe the Sun continuously, 24/7, without interruptions.
The mission’s primary scientific goal is to investigate the complex interactions within the magnetized solar atmosphere, focusing on dynamic and energetic events such as jets, flares, filament evolution, and eruptions. For the first time, SUIT will also enable spatially resolved measurements of solar spectral irradiance in a wavelength range critical for understanding the Sun–climate connection.
To support solar flare studies, SUIT incorporates an onboard intelligent detection system capable of identifying, localizing, and adjusting exposure for such events in real time. This advanced mechanism helps prevent detector saturation, ensuring high-quality data capture and enhanced scientific return from these high-energy solar phenomena.
