About Me
I am Soumita Mondal, a Research Scholar at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in the Department of Civil Engineering. I am currently working under the supervision of Dr. Paramita Bhattacharya, on the '' Issues on stability of underground pipeline in strength anisotropic and spatially heterogeneous variable soil under different loading conditions ''. I have joined the Ph.D. Programme at IIT Kharagpur on 2nd January 2020 and thereafter I have been offered fellowship under the prestigious Prime Minister's Research Fellows (PMRF) Scheme (December 2020 cycle).
Work done so far
In addition to the completion of assigned course works in the first year of my Ph.D. , detailed literature reviews have been done on the lower bound limit theorem of classical plasticity theory in conjunction with finite elements and second-order conic programming to determine statically admissible stress fields for analyzing the stability of underground structures and foundations. Thereafter the learned numerical skill is used to determine the resistance capacity of long pipelines in cohesionless soils. The resistance capacity of the pipelines depends on the soil in which it is buried. Due to the different types and shapes of soil particles, the sedimentation and deposition process, and shear strength anisotropy is induced in the soil. The effect of the soil anisotropy on the uplift and lateral resistance capacity of the pipeline is included in the study. The devastating effect of seismic loading or earthquake is an important factor that can intensify the upheaval action of pipelines resulting in disastrous failures, causing financial losses for water utility operations, long-term interruption of critical service for entire communities, and also severe damage to the environment in case of failure of gas or oil pipelines. The effect of modified pseudodynamic loading on the stability of buried pipelines is addressed.
