Born but never truly wanted. Instead, she was treated as a tool and a means to an end; a way to continue her parents’ legacy instead of making her own. And it turned out well, for the most part. She was hired by Arasaka, took on her mother’s work, and seemed to have a promising future. However, even the best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry.

GUARDED
trait
Her private life is just that, private, and her trust is not given but earned. Until then, she keeps everyone at a distance. It’s saved her life more than once.
FORMAL
trait
Not in attire, though she feels more comfortable in formal clothes, but rather in speech. Carefully crafted words can get one many places in the business world. However, it doesn’t suit every situation.
MACHIAVELLIAN
trait
If there is one thing she learned from her mother, it is how to play the field. In the world of corporate politics, Vivenne strives to be five steps ahead.
SELF-ASSURED
trait
At least half of survival in the business world is a self-assured confidence and Vivienne has that in spades.
HARSH
trait
Someone’s always looking to get ahead and they can smell weakness. Vivenne may have a harsh reaction to things, but it’s how she’s learned to protect herself.
CALLOUS
trait
She carries a disregard for those around that could be regarded as cruel. Vivenne was never encouraged to show affection nor given it herself, and so she doesn’t.
HANDGUNS
equipment
Nowhere is really safe. V stays in practice regularly.
BLADES
equipment
V’s mantis blades often have mods and adjustments to the factory design.
CRAFTING
skill
As a bioengineer, she doesn’t just design, but gets hands-on with her craft. It feels like it’s the only time she’s herself.
Her work at Arasaka has made her adept at crafting, a skill she has gotten a lot of use out of as a mercenary.

A Legacy
Liam and Imani Vale always wanted a child of their own, but life and work had a way of putting their plans on hold.
The two married in 2020. Almost immediately, the 4th corporation war began and slowly enveloped the world. Both worked for Arasaka and thus became embroiled in the war with Militech. While Liam traveled frequently between Arasaka locations and vendors, Imani worked as a bioengineer. The corporation made ample use of their skills. Now clearly wasn’t the time to have a child.
A short three years later, Liam, visiting the Night City Arasaka Tower on business, was caught in the explosion triggered by Johnny SIlverhand. While most would call this the end of their chances, Liam and Imani had been very careful about thinking ahead. Only years before, at the prime of his life, Liam had his sperm frozen. Still, it wasn’t the right time for Imani, a now grieving widow.
Arasaka’s compensation allowed Imani to live comfortably, but she wasn’t one to rest on her laurels. Imani put in the overtime and strengthened her work ethic. She quickly became known as an efficient, and subtly ruthless, employee. Gossip said that she was turned sour by the loss of her husband, but truly the two had been an equal match for one another.
More than her career, she hoped to pass her own genes and values down to someone else. Yet having a child when so much was at unrest wasn’t a sound decision.
Due to Arasaka’s global fallout after the bombing, Imani moved to Japan, where she was part of the corporation’s rebuilding efforts. With each passing year, Imani’s dreams for a child slipped further away.
Now married to her work, Imani sought a different way to bring a child into the world: she hired a woman named Aadila to carry her and Liam’s baby to term.
And so, in 2048, it was finally time. Vivenne Vale was born.
A Legacy
Imani was thrilled to have a child, though one wouldn’t be able to guess it the way she left Vivienne’s care to Aadila, the same woman who carried her to term. In Imani’s eyes, it was the perfect arrangement that allowed her to continue to work.
Of course, Imani controlled all of Vivenne’s tutoring, activities, and every bit of information she consumed. Aiming to give her a headstart in life, she had cyberware installed in her daughter as early as she was allowed to.
Aadila saw firsthand how Vivenne was unable to simply be a child and had, over the years, come to see the young girl as her own. She made plans to steal her away but Imani found out. Vivenne never saw Aadila again after that. She was upset at first, but soon forgot when Imani tampered with her memories using her cybernetics. Nothing would stop her from passing on her legacy.
From then on, Vivenne only had tutors. When she graduated, she secured a spot in an Arasaka college, which also naturally led to an internship with them. By the time she graduated at 22, she was a full employee with a degree in bioengineering and a few years of work under her belt.
All in all, she was the perfect asset to Arasaka and Imani was very pleased. During one of her remote work assignments, Vivenne made a contact in Jackie Welles. Familiar with a world she didn’t know, Vivenne kept in contact with him over the years for work.
Self-made
The long term plan had been for Vivienne to take over Imani’s work
in bioengineering. Perhaps Imani had succeeded too well because she could tell that her daughter’s accomplishments would soon begin to eclipse her own. Imani did not want to be shown up by such a young employee, daughter or not, and began to carefully steal Vivenne’s designs and ideas. She passed them off as her own and told Vivenne that she had already been working on these designs.
Vivenne, who did not trust anyone, least of all her mother, sabotaged her work with well-placed words and engineered malfunctions. Within a few months, Imani’s reputation became tarnished and questions were raised if she should retire. Vivenne watched with a sense of accomplishment. The final nail in Imani’s coffin was when Vivenne made sure her higher ups found out about Imani’s other deceits. A squad of Arasaka assassins dealt with her.
All seemed well until Vivenne’s own hand in the deceit was revealed. New to the game, she had played her hand too loosely. Barely escaping with her life, Vivenne skipped town and contacted an old friend: Jackie.
