Causes of Bad Breath

Halitosis – the clinical name for bad breath – happens when bacteria build up in the mouth, causing a bad odour. The good news: It is easily treatable to treat once you determine the cause.

Chronic halitosis can be a serious problem. Not only does it make social interactions unpleasant and awkward, but it can also indicate a serious underlying health issue. If you experience bad breath despite your regular oral hygiene routine, let your dentist know right away so that they can help you find appropriate treatment.

Some common causes of bad breath include:

• Dry mouth. This can be induced by stress, smoking, breathing through your mouth, and even certain medications.

• Diet. Foods like onion and garlic are likely culprits.

• Morning breath. Bacteria from leftover food particles multiply overnight and cause an odour.

• Plaque build-up. Saliva and food particles combine to give bacteria a perfect environment to grow.

Preventing Bad Breath

• Drink plenty of water. The exact amount you need will vary based on your activity level and physical makeup.

• Chew sugar-free gum. This stimulates saliva flow, making it harder for bacteria to multiply. (Skip the breath mints. They can leave a sugary residue on your teeth, allowing bacteria to grow.)

• Consult your doctor or dentist. Bad breath can be a symptom of an underlying disease and should be evaluated by a medical professional.

• Identify which foods cause bad breath. Garlic and onions are a common problem, but other foods can be just as problematic.

• Limit behaviors that contribute to bad breath, such as smoking and alcohol consumption.

Curing Bad Breath

• Brush your teeth for at least 2 minutes a day, followed by a thorough tongue brushing. Make sure to also brush the back of your tongue where odour-causing bacteria are often found.

• Floss to remove food particles from between your teeth.

• Use a mouthwash that kills the germs that cause bad breath to keep your mouth fresh.

• Drink plenty of water during the day. Limit beverages that are caffeinated, acidic, sugary, or alcoholic.

• Minimize morning breath by brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing regularly, and using a germ-killing mouthwash.
