If you want deep bass, active noise cancellation, and a traditional over-ear experience for immersive listening or focused work, choose Sony WH-CH720N-BLACK; if you need situational awareness, all-day comfort during intense exercise, or a waterproof option for swimming with a built-in microphone for calls, choose Voistek Bone Conduction Headphones. This isn't a battle of which one is technically "better" in a vacuum, but rather a decision between two completely different philosophies of sound delivery. One product is designed to shut out the world so you can focus entirely on the audio, while the other is engineered to keep your ears open so you never lose touch with your environment.
• Sony WH-CH720N-BLACK: Offers industry-leading active noise cancellation and rich, bass-heavy sound via 30mm dynamic drivers, but creates a sealed barrier that blocks environmental awareness. - Voistek Bone Conduction Headphones: Delivers an open-ear design for safety and comfort during high-intensity sports with IP68 waterproofing, but sacrifices deep bass response and lacks active noise isolation. Correction: The Sony is for those who want isolation; the Voistek is for those who need safety and sweat resistance.
The Sony WH-CH720N-BLACK is built for the person who wants to disappear into their music or podcast. Its core strength lies in its Dual Noise Sensor technology paired with the Integrated Processor V1. This combination actively analyzes ambient noise and generates anti-noise signals to cancel it out before it reaches your ear. If you spend time on busy subway trains, in noisy offices, or trying to sleep in a shared apartment, this feature transforms your listening environment from chaotic to serene. The headphones are over-ear style with faux leather cushions, creating a closed acoustic seal that is essential for this type of noise cancellation to work effectively.
Sound quality is where this device truly shines for audiophiles on a budget. It utilizes large 30mm dynamic drivers capable of reproducing frequencies from 7 Hz to 20 kHz. This wide range allows for a full-bodied audio experience with significant low-end punch, making it an excellent choice for genres like hip-hop, electronic, and rock. The Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE) further refines this by restoring high-frequency elements lost in compressed digital files, ensuring that even streaming tracks sound closer to the original master recording. If you are someone who prioritizes clarity, depth, and volume without external interference, these headphones deliver that immersion.

Battery life is another massive advantage for the Sony. You get up to 35 hours of playback with noise cancellation turned on, and that number jumps to 50 hours if you switch off the active features. For a traveler or a student who forgets to charge devices often, this longevity is a game-changer. The quick-charge capability is equally impressive; just three minutes of charging via USB Type-C gives you an hour of playtime. This means a rushed morning routine doesn't ruin your day. The inclusion of multipoint connection allows you to seamlessly switch between your laptop and phone, keeping you connected to two devices simultaneously without manual re-pairing. However, the trade-off is weight and comfort for some users. At 6.72 ounces, they are lighter than many competitors, but the over-ear design and headband clamping force might be too much for people who wear glasses all day or prefer to feel nothing on their head.
The Voistek Bone Conduction Headphones serve a very different demographic: the athlete, the commuter who rides a bike, and the parent who needs to hear their surroundings while staying connected. Instead of blocking your ears, these headphones sit in front of them, transmitting sound through vibrations on your cheekbones. This open-ear design is the defining feature. It leaves your ear canal completely unobstructed, meaning you hear your music and podcasts clearly while also hearing traffic, approaching cars, or a child calling your name. For urban cyclists or trail runners, this is not just a convenience; it is a critical safety feature. The model also includes LED light strips that glow red in the dark, adding a layer of visibility for night runs that standard headphones simply cannot offer.
Durability and versatility in extreme conditions are where this product earns its keep. It boasts a genuine IP68 waterproof rating, allowing it to withstand immersion up to 6 feet for 2 hours. This makes it one of the few wireless options suitable for lap swimming, snorkeling, or running in heavy rain without fear of water damage. Unlike most electronics that merely resist splashes, this unit is built to survive submersion. The construction uses a titanium frame that is flexible enough to fit various head sizes, including those wearing helmets, and soft skin-contact pads ensure it stays secure during high-humidity workouts or hot yoga sessions. If you have ever struggled with sweaty earbuds falling out or getting damaged by moisture, this design solves those problems permanently.
The battery situation here is more modest compared to the Sony. You get about 8 hours of continuous playtime, which is sufficient for a long training session or a commute, but you will likely need to charge it daily if you use it as your primary all-day device. The charging time is roughly 1.5 hours, though it does offer a rapid recharge feature that provides 2 hours of music from just 15 minutes of charging. A standout feature for outdoor enthusiasts is the built-in 32GB MP3 player. This internal storage allows you to store thousands of songs and listen wirelessly without needing your phone nearby. Whether you are hiking in a signal-free zone or swimming in a pool where Bluetooth doesn't penetrate well, the bone conduction transmits audio directly to your inner ear, bypassing the need for a constant data stream. The audio driver size is smaller at 16.3 millimeters, and the frequency response starts at 20 Hz, which naturally results in less deep bass than the Sony, but the clarity and openness make up for it in active scenarios.
• Best for Immersive Music Fidelity: Sony WH-CH720N-BLACK wins with its 30mm dynamic drivers and DSEE restoration, offering a richer, deeper sound profile ideal for home listening.
• Best for Situational Awareness: Voistek Bone Conduction Headphones are the only choice for runners, cyclists, or hikers who need to hear traffic and environmental sounds while listening to audio.
• Best for Water Sports: The Voistek takes this category outright with its IP68 rating, allowing for actual swimming and submersion, whereas the Sony should stay dry.
• Best for Long-Distance Travel: Sony dominates with 35 to 50 hours of battery life and active noise cancellation to block out airplane engines or train rumbles.
• Best for Night Safety: Voistek includes integrated LED lights for visibility, a feature completely absent on the Sony model.
• Best for Phone-Free Workouts: Voistek offers 32GB of internal storage, letting you leave your phone at home while still taking calls and playing music.
• Best for Hands-Free Calls in Wind: While both support calls, the Voistek's bone conduction technology and wind-noise reduction are specifically tuned for voice pickup during movement.
• Best for Deep Bass Lovers: Sony is the superior choice for those who prioritize low-end impact and heavy rhythm in their music.
• Best for Comfort During Sleep: The lightweight, open design of the Voistek is generally more comfortable for side sleepers who find over-ear cups uncomfortable against a pillow.
• Best for Multi-Device Users: Sony supports multipoint connection natively, allowing seamless switching between two sources, while Voistek focuses on single-device connectivity.
After analyzing the specifications and intended use cases, I would buy the Sony WH-CH720N-BLACK if my primary goal was high-fidelity music consumption, commuting, or working in a noisy office. The active noise cancellation and battery life are unmatched for general daily use. However, if I were looking for a dedicated lightweight headset for computer use while exercising, or specifically needed a best deep bass headphone for side sleepers (in the context of comfort and safety), I would immediately pivot to the Voistek. For the specific niche of for kids with microphone, the Voistek is actually the safer bet because the open-ear design ensures they remain aware of their surroundings while communicating, and the waterproofing protects against accidental spills or sweat during play. In my opinion, unless you absolutely need silence and deep bass, the Voistek's unique ability to combine safety, durability, and hands-free communication makes it the more versatile tool for an active lifestyle.
