If you want premium, immersive silence with a lightweight over-ear design for long listening sessions and big ears, choose Sony Over-Ear Active Noise; if you need an open-air, bone-conduction style that keeps you aware of your surroundings while running or cycling, choose Xmenha Over.
• Sony Over-Ear Active Noise: Its greatest strength is the powerful Integrated Processor V1 that creates a true acoustic sanctuary from ambient noise, while its trade-off is the closed-ear design which can feel isolating in active outdoor settings. This pick is for the audiophile, the executive traveler, and anyone with big ears seeking weightless comfort during deep focus.
• Xmenha Over: Its biggest advantage is the innovative open-ear architecture that allows full environmental awareness, making it ideal for safety-conscious activities, though it offers zero active noise cancellation. This pick is for the runner, the cyclist, and the gym-goer who refuses to plug their ears completely.
The Sony Over-Ear Active Noise headphones are engineered for those who demand a complete escape from the world. The core of this experience lies in the Integrated Processor V1 working in tandem with Dual Noise Sensor technology. This isn't just about turning down the volume; it is about creating an impenetrable shield against ambient sound. If you spend your days in noisy offices, on crowded flights, or in chaotic households, this feature transforms your environment into a quiet studio. The Digital Sound Enhancement Engine further elevates the experience by restoring compressed tracks to a quality that feels closer to the original studio master, ensuring that vocals remain crystal clear and frequencies are richly balanced.
Comfort is a non-negotiable factor for me, especially when considering headphones for big ears. Sony has addressed this with Featherlight Engineering, resulting in a device that weighs a mere 192 grams. This makes it the lightest wireless noise-canceling headband they have ever produced. The soft, oval-shaped synthetic leather earpads are designed to hug the contours of larger ears without causing pressure points. Combined with a massive 35-hour battery life, these headphones allow for transcontinental travel or a full work week of commuting without needing to recharge. You simply put them on, and the weight becomes almost imperceptible.

However, this product is not for everyone. The closed-ear design means you will be physically separated from the sounds of the world around you. While this is perfect for concentration, it removes situational awareness. Furthermore, the reliance on Bluetooth 4.2 connectivity, while stable, is older than some modern standards, though it remains sufficient for high-fidelity audio streaming. If you need to hear traffic while jogging or keep an eye on kids in a park, this model forces you to take them off entirely. It is a dedicated tool for immersion, not for multitasking in busy public spaces.
The Xmenha Over headphones represent a completely different philosophy: safety through awareness. These are Open Ear Earbuds that utilize bone conduction technology rather than traditional drivers placed inside the ear canal. The primary goal here is to let you enjoy music or podcasts while remaining fully connected to your environment. Whether you are cycling on a busy street, running through a neighborhood, or working out in a bustling gym, the open design ensures you never miss a car horn, a shout, or an important announcement. This makes them an exceptional choice for active users who prioritize safety over total isolation.
For those with sensitive ears or large ear canals, the "over-the-ear" placement without insertion is a game-changer. There is no pressure inside the ear canal, which eliminates the discomfort often associated with in-ear monitors. The build uses premium soft silicone material, keeping the fit stable even during vigorous movement. The unit weighs 0.12 kg (120g), offering a secure hold that doesn't slip, yet remains comfortable enough for extended wear. The inclusion of a microphone and touch controls means you can manage calls or skip tracks without breaking your stride or removing the device.
The trade-offs, however, are significant compared to closed-back competitors. Because these rely on air bone conduction, they do not offer active noise cancellation. In fact, the open cavity means you cannot block out wind noise or heavy machinery. Additionally, the battery life is rated at only 6 to 7 hours, which is roughly one-fifth of what the Sony model offers. If you plan on a long-haul flight or a 10-hour shift, you will find yourself recharging mid-day. They are also designed with a waterproof and sweatproof rating, making them durable for rain and intense workouts, but they lack the premium acoustic luxury and deep bass response found in traditional dynamic driver systems.
• Best for deep silence and focus → Sony Over-Ear Active Noise, thanks to its dual-sensor ANC and processor.
• Best for outdoor safety and awareness → Xmenha Over, as the open-ear design lets you hear traffic and surroundings clearly.
• Best battery life → Sony Over-Ear Active Noise with 35 hours of continuous playback versus 6–7 hours for the Xmenha.
• Best for big ears and all-day comfort → Sony Over-Ear Active Noise, specifically due to the lightweight 192g frame and oval earpads.
• Best for running and cycling → Xmenha Over, because the secure, non-insertion fit prevents slippage and maintains situational awareness.
• Best for call clarity in noisy environments → Sony Over-Ear Active Noise, utilizing beamforming microphones to isolate your voice.
• Best for sweat resistance → Both are suitable, but Xmenha Over is explicitly marketed with professional-grade waterproofing for daily sweat and rain infiltration.
• Best for audiophile sound restoration → Sony Over-Ear Active Noise, featuring DSEE to restore compressed audio files to studio quality.
After weighing the specifications and use cases, I would personally buy the Sony Over-Ear Active Noise. The combination of true active noise cancellation, an incredibly lightweight build, and a 35-hour battery life makes it the superior choice for daily life, especially for someone with big ears who needs a comfortable, immersive experience. While the Xmenha is a clever solution for runners, the Sony delivers a more versatile, high-performance audio package for the vast majority of listening scenarios. It is the better investment for anyone who wants to tune out the chaos and tune into their music.
Yes, the Sony Over-Ear Active Noise is specifically noted for its lightweight 192g design and soft, oval-shaped earpads that accommodate larger ears without pressure. The Xmenha also avoids ear canal insertion, which helps those with sensitivity, but the Sony offers a more secure over-ear seal.
The Sony Over-Ear Active Noise wins decisively with a 35-hour average battery life, whereas the Xmenha Over provides only 6 to 7 hours before requiring a recharge.
Only the Sony Over-Ear Active Noise features Active Noise Cancellation via its Integrated Processor V1 and Dual Noise Sensors to neutralize engine drone. The Xmenha Over is an open-ear design that does not block external sounds.
Both units are built for activity, but the Xmenha Over is explicitly described as having professional-grade waterproof and sweatproof capabilities for intense exercise, while the Sony focuses on general durability and water resistance for daily commuting.
