If you want a durable, bass-forward pair of wired headphones with sound isolation for active use, choose Sony MDRZX300/RED; if you need an ultra-lightweight, breathable over-ear option for casual listening on the go, choose Maxell 190319.
• Sony MDRZX300/RED: Delivers powerful, deep bass with neodymium magnets and sound isolation in a compact form factor; trade-off is the on-ear design which may lack long-term comfort for some.
• Maxell 190319: Offers an airy, open-air experience with soft cotton-linen ear cups and extreme lightness; trade-off is zero noise isolation and higher impedance that demands more power.
• Best for: The Sony pick suits those seeking punchy audio in a portable package, while the Maxell pick fits users prioritizing breathability and weight over sound sealing.
The Sony MDRZX300/RED stands out as a dedicated tool for listeners who prioritize impact and portability. Its design centers around a closed-type supra-aural configuration, meaning it sits directly on the ear rather than enclosing it. This physical arrangement, paired with the inclusion of a neodymium magnet within its 30mm dynamic driver unit, creates a specific sonic signature. The result is what the manufacturer describes as "high quality and powerful sound," specifically engineered to deliver clear mids and deep bass. For anyone looking for a hi res wireless headset for children or adults who enjoy pop, rock, or electronic music, this emphasis on bass response is a defining characteristic. The frequency range extends up to 24,000 hertz, suggesting a capability to reproduce high-frequency details that many budget options might miss.
Durability and connectivity are also central to this model's appeal. The unit comes equipped with a 1.2-meter cable that connects on both sides, a feature designed to prevent tangling and allow for flexible positioning whether the user is walking, running, or sitting still. The impedance sits at 24 ohms, a relatively low figure that indicates these headphones can be driven easily by standard smartphones, laptops, and portable media players without needing an external amplifier. This makes them an accessible choice for the average consumer who just wants to plug in and play. The control method relies on touch, allowing for basic interaction without reaching for a device, though the primary focus remains on the raw audio output provided by the dynamic driver.

Who should buy this? You should choose the Sony MDRZX300/RED if you need a pair of rotatable ear cups earphones for children that can withstand daily wear and tear. The closed design naturally provides sound isolation, blocking out ambient noise so the listener can focus on their audio without cranking the volume to dangerous levels. It is an excellent companion for commuting, school commutes, or outdoor activities where environmental noise is a factor. However, who should skip it? If you plan to wear headphones for four or five hours straight during a study session or a flight, the on-ear design might feel less comfortable than an over-ear alternative due to the pressure on the pinnae. While the red color offers a stylish look, the physical fit depends heavily on individual ear shape, and those with larger ears might find the clamping force too tight after extended periods.
In contrast to the sealed nature of the Sony, the Maxell 190319 embraces an open-air design philosophy. This distinction changes everything about how the product feels and sounds. The earpiece shape is explicitly defined as Over-Ear cups, which rest around the ear rather than pressing against it. The enclosure material combines cotton and linen, materials chosen for their breathability. This suggests a product built for comfort in warm environments or for users who simply hate the feeling of trapped heat around their ears. The item weight is listed at 2.24 ounces, making it significantly lighter than many competitors. For a parent searching for the best wireless headphones for children who might fidget or complain about heavy gear, this featherlight build is a compelling selling point.
The audio characteristics here diverge sharply from the Sony. With a frequency response capping at 20,000 hertz and an impedance of 140 ohms, this headphone behaves differently electrically. The high impedance means it requires more voltage to drive the drivers effectively compared to the Sony's 24 ohms. While the sensitivity is rated at 100 db, the open-air design means there is no passive noise isolation. You will hear exactly what is happening around you, and others around you might hear your music leaking out. This makes it unsuitable for noisy environments like busy streets or loud classrooms. However, for quiet home listening, library use, or travel in a silent vehicle, the open soundstage can feel more natural and less fatiguing.
This model is ideal for the user who values the "Music Festival/Bohemian" aesthetic and a relaxed listening posture. The slide headband allows for adjustability, ensuring the fit accommodates different head sizes, which is crucial for growing children or adults with varying preferences. The 4-foot rubber cord provides ample length for movement around a room or desk, and the inclusion of a remote for media control adds convenience for managing tracks without touching the phone. Yet, who should avoid this? If you are looking for a pair of headphones to use on a bus, train, or airplane, the lack of noise control will be a dealbreaker. You will constantly fight background noise, and the open design offers no protection against the outside world. Additionally, the reliance on Bluetooth connectivity mentioned in the specs (despite the wired jack) implies a need for pairing stability, but the high impedance remains a barrier for some older devices that cannot push enough power to reach full volume.
• Best for deep bass and impact → Sony MDRZX300/RED, thanks to its neodymium magnets and closed-back tuning.
• Best for all-day comfort in heat → Maxell 190319, utilizing cotton and linen materials in an over-ear open design.
• Best for blocking out noise → Sony MDRZX300/RED, as its closed-type enclosure provides natural sound isolation.
• Best for lightweight portability → Maxell 190319, weighing in at just 2.24 ounces compared to the Sony's 4.16 ounces.
• Best for driving from phones → Sony MDRZX300/RED, with its lower 24-ohm impedance requiring less power to get loud.
• Best for natural soundstage → Maxell 190319, where the open-air design prevents the "boxed-in" feeling of closed headphones.
• Best for durability and tangle resistance → Sony MDRZX300/RED, featuring a two-sided 1.2m cable connection.
• Best for adjusting to large heads → Maxell 190319, offering a slide headband mechanism for flexible sizing.
When I weigh the practical needs of a modern buyer, especially one considering these for a child, the Sony MDRZX300/RED edges out the competition. The combination of sound isolation, robust bass performance, and a manageable impedance makes it a far more versatile tool for everyday life. Whether the child is on a bus, in a classroom, or playing outside, the ability to block out distractions and hear clear audio without volume strain is invaluable. While the Maxell 190319 is undeniably comfortable and light, its open design limits its utility to very specific, quiet scenarios. In my opinion, the Sony is the safer, more functional choice for general use, particularly when the goal is to provide a reliable audio experience that works in almost any environment.
Yes, the Sony MDRZX300/RED features a closed-type design that isolates sound, making it much better for children in noisy environments than the open-air Maxell.
Due to its high 140-ohm impedance, the Maxell may require a stronger audio source to reach optimal volume levels compared to the easier-to-drive Sony.
The Maxell 190319 is significantly lighter at 2.24 ounces and uses breathable cotton-linen materials, offering superior comfort for extended wear in quiet settings.
Both connect via a 3.5mm jack, but the Sony's lower impedance ensures it will sound louder and clearer on most mobile devices without additional amplification.
