If you want deep, thumping bass with a secure wired connection for home listening or focused gaming, choose Sony MDR-XB500; if you need wireless freedom, sweat resistance, and long battery life specifically for workout sessions in various environments, choose Generic 808HEAVY.
• Sony MDR-XB500: Delivers massive, dynamic bass through its specialized 40mm XB drivers but is limited by a fixed 1.2m cable and lacks modern connectivity options like Bluetooth.
• Generic 808HEAVY: Offers versatile wireless playback with an IPX-4 rating for sweat protection and over 15 hours of battery life, though it trades the raw driver size for a lighter, drop-resistant build.
• Best for audiophiles on a budget who prioritize sound isolation and heavy bass: Sony MDR-XB500.
• Best for active users needing durability and untethered movement: Generic 808HEAVY.
The Sony MDR-XB500 is built for those who demand a visceral low-end experience without paying a premium for brand prestige. At the heart of these headphones lies a 40mm XB diaphragm driver unit, which is explicitly engineered to reproduce ultra-low frequency sounds. This isn't just marketing fluff; the direct vibe structure creates a tightly sealed acoustic design that forces the bass to feel "dynamic" and "deep." If you are someone who listens to hip-hop, electronic dance music, or rock and feels that standard headphones lack punch, this closed-back circum-aural design delivers exactly what you are looking for. The frequency response spans from 4 Hz to 24,000 Hz, ensuring that while the bass is king, the high frequencies remain present enough to keep the track detailed.
Comfort plays a massive role here, especially given the heavy emphasis on the "King size" ear cushions. With a diameter of 3.7 inches and a thickness of 1.8 inches, these ear cups are designed to cover your ears completely rather than pressing against them. This pressure-relieving feature is crucial for anyone planning long listening sessions, whether you are binge-watching movies, playing video games, or sitting at a desk working. The angled placement of the drivers inside the ear cup is another thoughtful detail; they align parallel to your ears to reduce physical pressure while maximizing the acoustic seal. This design choice means you get better sound isolation without the headache of tight clamping force often found in cheaper models.

However, the Sony MDR-XB500 comes with significant trade-offs that define its user base. First and foremost, it is a wired-only device. You are tethered to a 1.2-meter flat cord, which prevents any accidental tangles but also restricts your mobility. There is no Bluetooth capability, meaning you cannot pair these directly with a phone or tablet without an external adapter. Furthermore, while the sound isolation is excellent due to the closed design, there is no active noise cancellation technology, nor is there a microphone mentioned in the specs for calls. This makes the Sony MDR-XB500 a fantastic dedicated listening tool for home use, but a poor choice for commuting or moving around. If you are looking for in ear headphones for workout, this model is not the right fit because the bulky over-ear design and wired nature make it cumbersome during intense physical activity.
The Generic 808HEAVY Ultra targets a completely different demographic: the active listener who needs their audio gear to keep up with a chaotic lifestyle. Unlike the Sony, which focuses on static listening, this model is built around mobility and resilience. The headline feature here is the IPX-4 water resistance rating. This specification guarantees that the headphones can withstand sweat and light splashes, making them suitable for running, gym sessions, or outdoor workouts where humidity is a factor. While many traditional over-ear headphones fail when exposed to moisture, the 808HEAVY is constructed to be sweat-proof, addressing a common pain point for fitness enthusiasts.
Battery life is another area where this generic model pulls ahead significantly. It offers up to 15+ hours of continuous playback time, supported by a quick-charge capability. This is a game-changer for anyone who forgets to charge their devices nightly or needs headphones that last through a full day of travel without interruption. The absence of a headphone jack and reliance on Bluetooth connectivity removes the clutter of wires entirely. You can walk away from your computer or leave your phone in your pocket while keeping the music going. The design emphasizes a lightweight, durable construction that claims to be shock and drop-resistant. This suggests that even if you accidentally knock them off a treadmill bench or toss them into a gym bag, they are less likely to suffer damage compared to more fragile alternatives.
The audio profile of the 808HEAVY relies on "AURACORE Precision Tuned Technology," which promises a balanced output with deep bass and crisp highs. While it lacks the specific 40mm XB driver branding of the Sony, the focus here is on versatility across all music genres rather than one extreme frequency range. The passive noise canceling feature helps block out ambient noise during extended listening, creating an immersive environment without the need for power-hungry electronics. However, users should note that as an over-the-ear wireless model, the battery life is finite, and once the charge depletes, the headphones become useless until recharged. There is no mention of a wired backup option for emergency listening, so you are entirely dependent on the internal battery. This makes it an ideal best voice assistant open ear headphones for workout companion, provided you don't mind the bulk of over-ear cups, but it requires a habit of regular charging.

In my opinion, the decision comes down to how you plan to use these headphones. If you sit down to listen to music, watch movies, or play games and want the most powerful bass possible without worrying about charging, the Sony MDR-XB500 is the superior choice. Its large drivers and sealed design create an auditory experience that is hard to beat in this price bracket. However, if you are actively looking for sleep headphones for workout scenarios or general fitness tracking, I would strongly recommend the Generic 808HEAVY. The ability to move freely without a wire, combined with sweat resistance and a battery that lasts all day, makes it the only logical pick for an active lifestyle. For me, the convenience of wireless and the durability of the IPX-4 rating outweighs the raw bass potential of the Sony when the primary goal is staying active.
No, the Sony MDR-XB500 is not recommended for running. They are wired with a 1.2-meter cord and lack water resistance, which makes them prone to tangling and damage from sweat during exercise.
The product data sheets do not specify a built-in microphone for call functionality. They focus on music playback, noise control, and durability, so you may need to check the specific listing for call features.
The Sony MDR-XB500 uses a specialized 40mm XB driver designed specifically for extra bass, likely providing deeper sub-bass than the Generic 808HEAVY, which uses a balanced tuning approach for overall clarity.
Since the Generic 808HEAVY relies entirely on Bluetooth connectivity and has no headphone jack, you will need a compatible Bluetooth source device to use them. The Sony MDR-XB500 can connect to any device with a 3.5mm jack.
