If you want long battery life and a secure, lightweight fit for extended gym sessions, choose Sony Headphones; if you need an airy, open-ear design that keeps you aware of your surroundings while working out, choose JLab JBuds Open.
• Sony Headphones: The standout strength is the massive 50-hour battery life, making them ideal for marathon gym weeks without charging, but the trade-off is the lack of active noise cancellation and a standard over-ear design that can trap heat.
• JLab JBuds Open: These excel with their breathable open-back design and rotating earcups that prevent sweat buildup during intense cardio, though they offer less battery life than the Sony and rely on passive isolation rather than deep sound sealing.
• Who each pick is for: Choose the Sony if you prioritize uninterrupted listening time and comfort for long durations; choose the JLab if you need situational awareness and a cool, ventilated fit for high-intensity workouts.
The Sony WH-CH520 is built for the person who treats their headphones as a constant companion. With a staggering 50-hour battery life on a single charge, these wireless headphones are engineered to last through multi-day road trips, full workweeks, or those endless weekend festival marathons without ever needing a charger. If you are someone who forgets to charge their devices or simply hates the anxiety of a dying battery mid-workout, this feature alone makes the Sony a compelling choice. Even when you do run low, a quick three-minute charge via the included USB Type-C cable delivers up to 1.5 hours of playback, which is enough to get you through a tough set or commute home.
Design-wise, the Sony focuses on all-day wearability without the bulk. The lightweight build ensures that even after an hour of lifting or running, you won't feel the weight pressing down on your head. The swivel earcups allow for easy slipping on and off, while the adjustable headband and soft cushioned ear pads provide a gentle seal. This is particularly relevant for those looking for a kids headset for gym use or for teenagers who might be more sensitive to pressure points. However, it is important to note that while the padding is soft, the plastic enclosure and closed design mean they can trap heat more than an open-back model, so they might feel warmer during very high-intensity interval training compared to a ventilated option.
For audio enthusiasts, the Sony offers a customizable experience through the Sony | Headphones Connect App. You aren't stuck with a generic sound profile; you can tweak the EQ to match your specific music preferences, whether that means boosting bass for hip-hop or clarifying vocals for podcasts. The inclusion of DSEE technology helps restore quality to compressed music files, ensuring your streaming tracks sound better than usual. While the Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity allows for multipoint connection—letting you switch seamlessly between two devices like a phone and a laptop—the lack of active noise control means you will still hear the ambient gym noise. If you are using these as bluetooth earbuds for gym alternatives in a headphone form factor, they are excellent for focus, provided you don't mind the background chatter.

You should buy the Sony Headphones if your primary goal is longevity and comfort for moderate to high-volume listening sessions where you want to isolate yourself from the world. They are perfect for weightlifting zones where you want to tune into your own rhythm, or for casual cardio where you don't need to hear every machine beep around you. Conversely, skip this product if you need to stay hyper-aware of your environment for safety reasons, such as in a crowded, busy gym floor where hearing footsteps or equipment moving nearby is crucial. Also, if you have extremely sweaty hands or heads and find closed designs uncomfortable due to heat retention, the Sony might not be your ultimate solution despite its other virtues.
The JLab JBuds Open takes a fundamentally different approach by embracing an open-back design that prioritizes airflow and environmental awareness. This isn't just a stylistic choice; it is a functional one for the gym-goer who gets hot easily. The Cloud Foam earcups and headband cushion are designed specifically to avoid heat buildup, allowing air to circulate freely around your ears during those grueling 8-hour shifts or intense summer workout sessions. The rotating earcups adjust to your head shape, ensuring a snug yet breathable fit that doesn't clamp down too tightly. This makes them an exceptional choice for anyone who finds traditional over-ear headphones suffocating after twenty minutes of sweating.
Audio performance here is driven by a dual coaxial driver array featuring a 35mm and a 12mm driver, which works together to create a layered, spacious soundstage. The LabBoost technology is a key feature, deepening the bass response across all EQ settings so you don't lose punch just because the design is open. While the open-back nature naturally leaks some sound, the LabFocus sound steering technology helps minimize leakage for a more personal listening experience, balancing the need for openness with decent audio fidelity. The JLab App gives you granular control over touch controls and sound presets, allowing you to switch between Signature, Balance, or Bass Boost modes instantly. This level of customization ensures that even with an open design, you can tailor the audio to match the energy of your workout.
Battery life on the JLab JBuds Open is solid, offering 24+ hours of playtime, which covers a full workday plus your evening unwind session. While this is less than half the duration of the Sony, it is still sufficient for most users who charge their devices nightly. The inclusion of Bluetooth 5.0 and multipoint connection means you can pair with your laptop and phone simultaneously, ensuring you never miss a call while switching between a workout playlist and a work notification. The active noise-canceling mics handle calls clearly, even in noisy environments, though the open design itself does not block external noise.
You should choose the JLab JBuds Open if you value situational awareness above all else. They are ideal for runners, cyclists, or anyone who needs to hear the gym environment, including coaches, traffic, or safety announcements. The "rotatable ear cups" mentioned in their design language allow for a flexible fit that adapts to movement, making them a strong contender for dynamic activities. However, if you are looking for deep, immersive silence or absolute isolation from the clanking of weights and shouting of trainers, these open-back headphones will let that sound in. They are also a great fit for those who prioritize a warranty-backed product, given the robust two-year warranty coverage that JLab provides.
• Best for battery life → Sony Headphones: With 50 hours of playtime versus the JLab's 24+, the Sony wins decisively for long-term usage without recharging.
• Best for breathability and cooling → JLab JBuds Open: The open-back design and Cloud Foam materials prevent heat buildup, making them superior for high-sweat environments.
• Best for sound isolation → Sony Headphones: The closed-over-ear design blocks more external noise compared to the open-back JLab model.
• Best for situational awareness → JLab JBuds Open: The open design lets you hear your surroundings, essential for safety in busy gyms or outdoor runs.
• Best for durability and support → JLab JBuds Open: Comes with a two-year warranty compared to the Sony's 90-day limited warranty.
• Best for app customization → Both: Both offer dedicated apps (Sony | Headphones Connect and JLab App) for EQ and control tweaks.
• Best for lightweight comfort → Sony Headphones: At a significantly lower weight (0.42 g vs 252 g), the Sony feels almost weightless on the head.
• Best for modern connectivity → JLab JBuds Open: Features Bluetooth 5.0, whereas the Sony uses the older Bluetooth 4.0 standard.
After weighing the specifications and intended use cases, I would personally choose the JLab JBuds Open for the gym. While the Sony Headphones offer incredible battery life and a lighter feel, the open-back design of the JLab is a game-changer for physical activity. The ability to keep your ears cool and remain aware of your surroundings prevents the claustrophobic feeling that often comes with heavy gym sessions. In my opinion, the trade-off of slightly shorter battery life is worth it for the comfort and safety benefits. If you are serious about your fitness routine and want gear that evolves with your movement rather than trapping you in a bubble, the JLab JBuds Open is the smarter pick for gym use.
Both models list age ranges that include kids and teens, but the Sony's lightweight build and simple controls make it a practical kids headset for gym use, while the JLab's open design is safer for younger children who need to hear their environment.
Neither product features active noise cancellation in the traditional sense; the Sony relies on passive isolation from its closed design, while the JLab uses an open design that intentionally lets sound in.
The Sony Headphones dominate with up to 50 hours of battery life, meaning you can go weeks without charging, whereas the JLab JBuds Open offers 24+ hours, which is still excellent but requires more frequent top-ups.
While I cannot quote current prices, the JLab includes a two-year warranty compared to the Sony's 90-day limited warranty, suggesting a longer-term value proposition for the JLab regardless of the initial cost difference.
