If you want immersive, high-fidelity sound with world-class noise isolation for long flights and home theater immersion, choose Sonos Ace Noise Cancelling; if you need a lightweight, sweat-proof open-ear design that keeps you aware of your surroundings during workouts and commutes, choose Essonio XB1.
• Sonos Ace Noise Cancelling: Delivers industry-leading Dolby Atmos spatial audio and 30 hours of battery life but is a heavy, closed-back over-ear unit best suited for stationary or seated travel.
• Essonio XB1: Offers an ultra-light 55g build with IPX5 waterproofing and open-ear comfort for active use, though it sacrifices deep bass isolation and offers a shorter 20-hour playback window.
• Best for the traveler who prioritizes silence and cinematic audio: Sonos Ace Noise Cancelling.
• Best for the commuter or athlete who needs durability and awareness: Essonio XB1.
The Sonos Ace is engineered for the listener who demands absolute immersion. If your primary goal is to escape the chaos of a noisy environment, this headphone utilizes active noise cancellation that neutralizes external sounds to create a private sanctuary. This is particularly critical when flying; as sleep headphones for airplane cabins, the Ace transforms a jarring journey into a quiet retreat. The enclosure material is polycarbonate, housing plush memory foam ear pads wrapped in soft vegan leather. This design ensures a bespoke fit that accommodates various head shapes and hairstyles without causing pressure points, making it ideal for those who plan to wear them for extended periods during long-haul flights or marathon movie sessions.
Audio fidelity is where this device truly distinguishes itself. It supports lossless audio streaming via Bluetooth or USB-C, ensuring that every detail from your music library is preserved. The standout feature is the Dolby Atmos experience with dynamic head tracking. This technology creates a three-dimensional soundscape that moves with your head, effectively simulating a surround-sound theater experience even when you are wearing over-ear headphones. For anyone looking for spatial audio over ear headphones for airplane travel, this feature turns the confined space of an economy seat into a personal cinema. The 40-millimeter dynamic drivers push out rich frequencies ranging from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz, delivering clarity that standard consumer headphones often miss.

Battery performance is another pillar of its design for the frequent flyer. You get up to 30 hours of playback with Active Noise Cancellation enabled. This capacity means you can cross multiple time zones without needing to hunt for a charging port. When you do need power, the rapid charging capability is a lifesaver; just three minutes of charging grants up to three hours of listening time. While it does not group with other Sonos speakers like a traditional multi-room system, it excels at swapping TV audio back and forth with compatible soundbars, bridging the gap between portable audio and home entertainment. However, at 11.04 ounces, it is heavier than many alternatives, so it is better suited for sitting still rather than running or vigorous movement.
The Essonio XB1 takes a completely different approach by prioritizing safety, breathability, and rugged durability. It is an open-ear air conduction headphone designed for users who refuse to be cut off from their environment. Unlike the sealed cups of the Ace, these sit outside the ear canal, allowing ambient sound to pass through naturally. This makes them an excellent choice for bone conduction headphones for airplane use only if you are in a lounge setting where you need to hear announcements, but they are far more effective for daily commutes, cycling, or outdoor running where situational awareness is non-negotiable. Weighing merely 55 grams, the ultralight construction uses a titanium alloy frame and cotton accents to ensure zero fatigue on the ears, even after hours of wear.
Durability is the core promise here. With an IPX5 rating, the seamless integrated body withstands heavy sweat during intense gym sessions and protects against splashes or light rain during outdoor adventures. Standard IPX4 gear might falter under such conditions, but the Essonio is built to last through rigorous physical activity. The ergonomic earhooks provide a snug, stable fit that stays firmly in place during vigorous movement, eliminating the worry of your headphones falling out while you are sprinting or lifting weights. Control is handled via three dedicated physical buttons rather than touch sensors. This is a practical decision; physical buttons avoid accidental inputs caused by sweat or shaking hands, offering a smooth, worry-free experience that touch controls often struggle to deliver in wet conditions.
Sound customization is handled through three physical bass presets—Heavy Bass, Super Heavy Bass, and Bass Boost Off—that you can toggle directly on the headset without needing a mobile app. This immediate access allows you to tailor the audio profile instantly for workout music, podcasts, or movies. The 34.8mm driver provides full, balanced sound with 360-degree spatial audio capabilities, bringing rich, layered details to everyday tracks. Battery life clocks in at up to 20 hours of continuous playback, which is sufficient for most workdays and weekend trips, backed by a staggering 350 hours of standby time. However, because of the open-ear design, you will not get the same level of noise isolation as the Sonos Ace, making it less ideal for blocking out a crying baby on a plane or the roar of a jet engine.
• Best for Airplane Silence: Sonos Ace Noise Cancelling. Its active noise cancellation is superior for blocking jet engine hum, whereas the Essonio XB1 lets outside noise in.
• Best for Long Flight Comfort: Sonos Ace Noise Cancelling. The plush memory foam and over-ear design are better for sleeping or relaxing than the open hooks of the Essonio.
• Best for Workout Durability: Essonio XB1. The IPX5 waterproof rating and secure earhooks make it ready for sweat and rain, unlike the fabric-covered Sonos Ace.
• Best for Battery Life: Sonos Ace Noise Cancelling. The 30-hour runtime with ANC on beats the 20-hour limit of the Essonio.
• Best for Situational Awareness: Essonio XB1. The open-ear design lets you hear traffic and announcements, a crucial safety feature the Sonos blocks out.
• Best for Audio Fidelity: Sonos Ace Noise Cancelling. Lossless audio support and Dolby Atmos with head tracking offer a premium, theater-like experience.
• Best for Lightweight Portability: Essonio XB1. At 55g, it is significantly lighter than the 11.04-ounce Sonos, reducing neck strain.
• Best for Quick Charging: Both offer rapid charging, but the Sonos provides 3 hours of playback from just 3 minutes of charge, matching the Essonio's speed.
For me, the winner depends entirely on the context of your travel. If I am booking a flight and need to sleep, block out the crying infant next to me, and watch a movie in high definition, I am choosing the Sonos Ace Noise Cancelling. The combination of Dolby Atmos, lossless audio, and 30-hour battery life makes it the ultimate tool for the modern traveler who wants to disconnect from the world. However, if my trip involves a lot of walking, sightseeing, or gym time, I would pivot to the Essonio XB1 for its unbreakable durability and ability to keep me safe and connected to my surroundings. Ultimately, for pure airplane comfort and audio quality, the Sonos Ace is the superior choice.
Yes, the Sonos Ace is specifically designed for sleep with its plush over-ear cushions and noise cancellation. The Essonio XB1 is open-ear, so it may let in too much cabin noise for sleeping comfortably.
The Essonio XB1 is built for this with an IPX5 waterproof rating and secure earhooks. The Sonos Ace is not rated for sweat and is heavier, making it less suitable for vigorous exercise.
No, the Essonio XB1 features physical buttons for bass presets, requiring no app. The Sonos Ace requires the app for certain features but works well via Bluetooth pairing alone for basic playback.
The Sonos Ace offers 30 hours of playback, giving it an edge over the Essonio XB1's 20-hour battery life for longer journeys without recharging.
