OpenQuake - How to Install in Windows!!

1) Download OpenQuake for windows.

There are multiple ways to do so. You can download it from the command line, or from GitHub. One of the ways is to download the executive file and follow the installation process. Download the required version of OpenQuake from the link below.

2) Now you can use webui or cmd version to use OpenQuake.

Webui is good to run OpenQuake files, like running hazard or risk calculations. However, for writing python codes or using hmtk or smtk modules, a python environment like PyCharm or Jupyter Notebook are preferred.

3) Using OQ in PyCharm

PyCharm is a popular integrated development environment (IDE) for the Python programming language. Developed by JetBrains, PyCharm offers a wide range of features that make it a favorite among developers, including intelligent code completion, syntax highlighting, and error highlighting.

In PyCharm, to load OpenQuake modules,

I) Open a python file, or create a new python file. I opened a file "declusteringbvalues.py"

II) Go to Settings. (Shortcut: Cltr + Alt + S)

III) Under Project:declusteringbvalues.py-> Project Interpreter -> Add Interpreter -> Add Local Interpreter. (See pictures below)

IV) Select System Interpreter -> "..." (Browse) -> Select python.exe on the OpenQuake installation location. (Picture below)

V) Now all the modules like openquake.engine should be loaded.

VI) On every restart of PyCharm, you may need to select project interpreter. However, "Add interpreter" is not needed. The python location will be saved and can be selected from the drop-down list (on the left side of Add Interpreter).

4) Installing and using OQ Toolkits such as HMTK, SMTK in PyCharm

In Windows, it can be tricky to install and use toolkits like smtk and rmtk. More Info: My Experience with OpenQuake - SMTK (Project: EEWS) Let's try to install gmpe-toolkit here.

I) Clone repository https://github.com/GEMScienceTools/gmpe-smtk (See picture below: "Download ZIP") and extract the zip file.

II) Open OpenQuake Engine(consol).exe, but run as administrator. Enter the command "where python". The path to the OpenQuake python.exe should come to the top. (See figure below.)

III) Change the directory to that extracted location. (See figure below.)

IV) Use the command "python setup.py install"

V) Now you can use smtk module with PyCharm.

5) Adding OpenQuake python to environmental variables

To add the path of python.exe in environmental variables, follow these steps.

a) Search "edit the system environmental variable" and click "Environmental variables", or System Properties-> Advanced -> Environmental variables.

b) Select "Path" and click "Edit" (See figure below)

c) Click "New" and add the path to the python.exe of the OpenQuake. (But do not include python.exe, and add "\" at the end. For this example, the path is "C:\Program Files\OpenQuake Engine\python3\" (See attached below)

d) Move the recently added path to the top.

e) Click OK, and again Click OK.

You can even install toolkits like smtk using cmd.exe too.

I) Open cmd.exe, but run as administrator. Enter the command "where python". The path to the OpenQuake python.exe should come to the top. (See figure below.)

II) Change the directory to that extracted location of smtk. (See figure below.)

III) Use the command "python setup.py install"

IV) Now you can use smtk module with PyCharm.
