"Something There" was written by lyricist Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken.[1] According to Menken, "Something There" was written as "a very quick replacement for ... 'Human Again'," the latter of which was ultimately cut from Beauty and the Beast because it was considered "too ambitious" for the film.[2] Eleven minutes in length, producer Don Hahn explained that the song was cut because "We just couldn't figure out how to make it work and not take away from the central story of Belle."[3] Upon learning that "Human Again" was removed from Beauty and the Beast, Ashman and Menken were forced to return "to the drawing board to write something more contained and simple," the ultimate result of which was the love song "Something There,"[4] which has been described as "shorter and more direct" than "Human Again".[5] The creative team had originally believed that the Beast saving Belle from the wolves was enough to justify the dance sequence near the end of the film, though later realised they had in fact not yet earned this moment; this quiet song where Beast gives Belle his library was pitched and written by Howard Ashman and "as soon as that was written, we knew the movie was going to work".[6]

In the book The Meanings of "Beauty and the Beast": A Handbook, author Jerry Griswold observed that the "Something There" musical sequence is preceded by "the once feisty Belle ... bandaging and nursing [the Beast]" after he rescues her from the wolves.[11] Contextually, the purpose of the song has been identified as "Dramatizing [Belle and the Beasts'] partnership."[12] Leading up to the musical sequence, the Beast first "surprises Belle by showing her his library and then they learn to eat together."[13] Author Robin O. Winter observed that "During the scene they begin to see beneath their outer appearances and start to appreciate each other's inner qualities,"[13] while one critic identified this as one of the scenes in "which Belle and the Beast hesitantly slowly open up to one another."[14] Writing for Wesleyan University, Rachel Anne Silverman observed that "Something There" depicts "The first time Belle and the Beast's attraction is introduced," describing the couple's relationship as "a passion that has developed over time."[15] Initially, Belle is alarmed "as she realizes her growing love for the Beast,"[16] briefly hiding behind a tree as she sings.[17] According to the Hal Leonard Corporation and Music Theatre International, the castle's staff of enchanted objects also discover "something different between Belle and the Beast."[18][19] "Something There" concludes with Belle and the Beast retreating to a fireplace and reading.[20] In the original film, "Something There" immediately precedes the film's title song. However, for its special edition re-release, the song is immediately followed by the newly reinstated "Human Again".[21]

In the song's first verse, "Belle articulates how her attraction to [the Beast] stems from his shut-off demeanor," singing, "There's something sweet/And almost kind/But he was mean/And he was coarse and unrefined/But now he's dear/And so unsure/I wonder why I didn't see it there before."[36][23] The Beast's verse reads, "when we touched she didn't shudder at my paw."[37] According to Laurence E. MacDonald, author of the book The Invisible Art of Film Music: A Comprehensive History, Benson "shocked many filmgoers with his richly resonant baritone."[35] Finally, Belle sings the song's bridge, which reads, "New and a bit alarming/Who'd have ever thought that this could be?/True, that he's no Prince Charming/But there's something in him that I simply didn't see." According to the Los Angeles Times, by the end of "Something There", "the audience understands what Belle and Beast feel and how disconcerting those emotions seem."[29]

The lyrical content of the song strongly emphasizes upon the fact that Belle and the Beast are beginning to fall in love. The main characters are beginning to think maybe something was absent within the first few hours Belle and the Beast met, causing them to clash. But now that the "something" is here, the love is flowing in a more stable pattern. The other servants are touched by the romance before them, and Mrs. Potts doesn't allow Chip to find out until he is older.

Belle: There's something sweet

And almost kind

But he was mean and he was coarse and unrefined

And now he's dear, and so unsure

I wonder why I didn't see it there before

Beast: She glanced this way

I thought I saw

And when we touched she didn't shudder at my paw

No it can't be, I'll just ignore

But then she's never looked at me that way before

Belle: New and a bit alarming

Who'd have ever thought that this could be

True that he's no Prince Charming?

But there's something in him that I simply didn't see

Lumiere: Well, who'd have thought?

Mrs. Potts: Well, bless my soul

Cogsworth: Well, who'd have known?

Mrs. Potts: Well, who indeed?

Lumiere: And who'd have guessed they'd come together on their own?

Mrs. Potts: It's so peculiar.

Lumiere/Mrs. Potts/Cogsworth: We'll wait and see, a few days more

There may be something there that wasn't there before

Cogsworth: You know, perhaps there's something there

That wasn't there before

Chip: (Spoken) What?

Mrs. Potts: There may be something there that wasn't there before

Chip: (Spoken) What's there, mama?

Mrs. Potts: (Spoken) Shh! I'll tell you when you're older.

Belle: There's something sweet

And almost kind

But he was mean and he was coarse and unrefined

And now he's dear, and so unsure

I wonder why I didn't see it there before

Beast: She glanced this way

"(There's) Always Something There to Remind Me" is a pop song written in the 1960s by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. The song is about breaking up with a lover and wanting to forget about them. However, something always reminds the singer of them.

I have been experiencing this for the last few months, I have been searching the web looking for answers. I am a 45 year old female, in good health, I take no medications, thin, active, I eat healthy, so I am at a loss. I have this feeling like there is something under my right rib cage as if something is stuck underneath or enlarged. At first I thought I had strained a muscle b/c I had been working out in the yard the day before it started. It doesn't hurt, it just feels like there is something there that shouldn't be but when I touch the area there is no swelling or bulge. After about 3-4 weeks when it wasn't going away I went to see my doctor. They did blood work, urine labs and sent me for an ultrasound of gallbladder, all came back normal. I have no other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, etc. just this feeling like something is there. It seemed to go away on it's own and then came back and has come and gone since sometimes lasting a few days, sometimes a few weeks. When it is back wearing a bra is uncomfortable. Sometimes there is a warmth or burning sensation in the area. The only other symptoms I have had that I think are related are these: A few months before this started I experienced a fluttering sensation, almost like when I was pregnant and the baby moved, in the same location, a couple of times. Since this has started, on 3 or 4 different occasions, I have experienced a charlie horse like spasm in the same area, below the right rib, when bending over from a sitting position. Does anyone have any answers as to what this might be? Does it sound like IBS? Peptic Ulcer? Hiatal Hernia?

I've been having the symptoms for several months (feels like something is stuck under my right rib, not much else) Lab work came back fine. Gallbladder checked out perfectly clear, but it turns out I have a lesion on my liver. Getting an MRI next week.

So many of us have something similar, and no doctor i have seen has been able to figure it out. I have the same problem sitting in a car, especially for longer drives. It helps me to use a small back support pillow--keeps me from slumping

hi there! I never check this thread anymore, so sorry. so, all is fine so far. I had my third pregnancy since and it was incredibly uncomfortable during that time. The sensation comes and goes but I have a few episodes where I ben over and feel like something I can only describe as an organ flipping or getting stuck. The pain is incredible and takes my breath away for a few moments. I do feel this more in the evening after eating and I do wonder if it has anything to do with having three kids/pregnancies. Perhaps something muscular or maybe an organ out of place. ff782bc1db
