Governors Academy Welcome

Dear Special Olympics Athletes, Coaches, Parents, and Friends: It is a special pleasure to welcome you back to The Governor’s Academy for the 2018Fall Soccer Tournament. This will be my eighth year partnering with the SpecialOlympics, and the 31st year that the Academy has hosted this tournament. It has beenan honor for our school to partner with Special Olympics for so long, and I am confidentthat this year’s tournament will be as successful as ever. Many of the values celebrated by Special Olympics resonate powerfully with our schoolcommunity—the benefits of physical fitness, the joy of competition, the lessons learnedthrough working as a team toward a common goal, and perseverance in the face ofadversity. The Governor’s community welcomes this opportunity to host you each year, and to cheer you on as you showcase your skills on the field of competition. As you compete today, please know that there are hundreds of volunteers cheering youon here in Byfield, and hundreds more rooting for you in spirit around the country.Inspired by you, last year the Governor’s Academy created a National Day of Service forour entire school family to coincide with the Special Olympics Tournament weekend.Parents and alumni will be engaging in service projects in their own communities, sofrom Newburyport to Seattle, friends of the Governor will be joining hands in support ofthe commitment to service that Special Olympics represents. So welcome, and thank you. We are a better and stronger community because of ourrelationship with you. Sincerely,Peter H. Quimby ’85, Ph.D.Head of School
