THE PANAMANIAN LACE POLLERA IN THE 19TH CENTURY
By: Oscar A. Velarde B.
The "old women" of the dominant groups of Panama City abandoned the use of polleras in public, from the first two decades of the nineteenth century, but not inside their home. On the other hand, the use by the women of the town was so common that lace polleras and montunas were considered one of the distinctive features "of the country", meaning, the Isthmus of Panama.
Indeed, in 1817 Don Andrés Baleato noticed that the "old women" wore the costume of Europe, "and many of the other women, the ancient dress of the country", the French traveler Gaspar Theodore Mollien, after pointing out in 1823 that the men and women of the ruling classes of this city dressed the English way, observed frankly surprised that the women of the town kept the dresses with lace frills that had not been used in France from a long time ago.
Probably, during this period - two first decades of the XIX century - is when the women of the town were able to acquire a greater variety of fabrics at a lower price, for the tailoring of their skirts, as well as the gold jewels that have traditionally accompanied the use of this costume, given the wide economic benefits generated in the country, from 1808 to 1818, by direct business with Jamaica, transformed by England into a large warehouse of its industrial production. Referring to that period, "El Constitucional del Istmo", No. 9, of January 28, 1832, stated the following: "The expenses of transit were spread in abundance over the people who also spent without hesitation as long as they felt like it... Luxury took an inconceivable increase, "even the most superfluous was believed in good faith to be a simple necessity".

ELECCION Y FOLKORE
CHOICE AND FOLKORE
By: Donatilo Ballesteros Zarzavilla
When the men became gregarious, he had the need to choose a government mechanism to lead the human groups that constituted the clans or tribes that they were part of, initially; the fiefs, Nations, Kingdoms and Republics, later; so that a balance was achieved between who leads the community, those who do justice and those who dictate the rules of society; in terms of equity, equality, justice and participation; and the members of said community feel their rights protected and defended; however, in some periods of history and the development of Humanity, abuses of power occurred and distorted the purpose of these societies and gave rise to a dark period where everything that we call human rights today was unknown.
Meanwhile, each individual began to practice, either by habit, either by learning from father to son, or by imitation, some activities that were taking root within their communities and within the family, resulting in people not knowing their origin, but their common and current practice, converting these expressions over time, in their traditions and customs, the basis of their local folklore. For example, in places like Scotland, people identified each family or clan by colors; in the same way as a surnames indicates in Azuero the origin of the individual.
Both things were developed in by their own, since a long time ago; men were being forced to determine by selection his rulers, leaders and leaders in all types of activity, whether agricultural, political, sports, etc., either through the application of natural law where the strongest is the one who directs, or through the selection of skills, abilities or abilities of the leader, as required for the benefit of the members of the community, leaving names with indelible letters such as Leonidas of Sparta, Demosthenes, Aristotle or Plato in Greece. Starting from that premise, we go back to the Greek era where free men met in the Agora to discuss the different issues of community interest, a place where oratory showed its luster with exponents such as Pericles, and it was usual for the most difficult decisions to be resolved through votes, one of the most famous being the one that ordered the condemnation of Socrates to take the hemlock.
