SOL A LEE, Ph.D.
I am a postdoctoral associate in Prof. Harry Atwater and Prof. Chengxiang Xiang's lab at Caltech. My research focuses on materials and system design for (photo)electrochemical processes aimed at producing clean energy feedstocks. I am currently studying the diurnal effects on solar-assisted zero-gap CO2 reduction electrolyzer using operando X-ray tomography and designing photoelectrochemical tandem devices to facilitate spontaneous CO2 reduction. My work is at the intersection of Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry, and Applied Physics, addressing key (photo)electrochemical phenomena and advancing decarbonization technology.
During my Ph.D. at Seoul National University under the guidance of Prof. Ho Won Jang, I focused on tailoring the transition metal-based catalysts and exploring green hydrogen production through photovoltaic-assisted tandem devices. My research involved investigating solid-liquid interfaces, semiconductor junctions, and catalytic activity of the devices to understand the photogenerated carrier transport and recombination kinetics. My research is based on engineering the optical/structural/electronic properties of materials as well as catalytic activities using strategies including band engineering, alloying, doping, and nanostructuring.
