after rikki and two other girls, cleo and emma, end up adrift at sea (after being stuck on and subsequently stealing a boy's boat). they end up paddling their way to mako island, where the three fall down into a cave, a small pool in a long-exinct volcano. as they get into the water, intent on swimming out of the cave, the rays of the full moon hit it. after making their way home, they soon discover that the magic of the moon and the water has left the three girls as mermaids, growing tails after prolonged exposure to water.
