born to the royal family of valleyda, red and her twin sister were bound by tradition at birth; red, being the younger, second daughter, was to be sent to the wolf in the wilderwoods, in attempt to stave off the monsters who live there and to bring back the kings, the lost figures of their relgion. as well as to protect her sister from the dangerous magic she was guarding, red left to the wilderwood, where she did find the wolf, but found him as a man, eammon, who gave himself to the forest day after day to keep it stable, keep it from releasing its monsters and swallowing the world whole.

she got to know eammon, in the months they spent together, falling in love with him, all the meanwhile trying her best to find a way to get out of the woods and back to her sister. little did she know, neve was doing the same thing, leading to a fight where eammon took the entirety of the wilderwood magic into him, turning him into something more monster, more forest than man. when it was clear that neve's plan was dangerous, she gave herself to the shadowlands, and eammon gave half of his magic to red, turning her into a carrier for part of the wilderwood itself, magic she intended to use to get neve back.

when they do get each other back, it's short lived, as they both die soon after, neve's shadowland magic and red's wilderwood magic cancelling each other out until there's nothing left. that, it turns out, is also short lived, as they're brought back soon after leaving, although without either of their souls. red doesn't mind, for the most part, and the release of the wilderwood and shadowlands magic means there's no longer anything keeping eammon and her tied to the woods, letting them explore the world they'd been cut off from.
