born to the royal family of valleyda, neve and her twin sister were bound by tradition at birth; red, being the younger, second daughter, was to be sent to the wolf in the wilderwoods, in attempt to stave off the monsters who live there and to bring back the kings, the lost figures of their religion. red left, leaving neve to try to get her back. she turns to the new high priestess, who shows her how to harness cold, shadowy magic from the trees of the wilderwood, in hopes of freeing red's tie to the woods. the plan doesn't work, instead nearly freeing the kings, who are not benevolent but vengeful, and in the end, in sending them back to the shadowlands where they came from, neve sacrifices herself there, too.
there, she finds reluctant help from youngest and seemingly oppositional king solmir, who wants nothing more than to free the kings in order to kill them. they grow close, through it, despite her initial hatred for the man, and they do manage to kill the kings, however disposing of the magic neve took in to do so kills her. she's brought back, in the end, without her soul and without her magic, but she finds that that's just fine, though she uses the news of her death to explore the world and herself rather than rule.
