SODA Off-Road Racing is an off-road racing simulation released for both DOS and Windows PCs. The game was based on the SODA series but featured only fantasy vehicles and tracks. The game was developed by Software Allies, a collaboration of companies that included Papyrus.

While this is supposed to be off-road racing and the vehicles shouldn't handle the way they do in Sierra's NASCAR Racing game, the spinning out every time you steer the slightest to the left or right is just maddening. It takes a delicate touch just to get going and reach a decent speed, but any amount of swerving in one direction, no matter how minute, will cause a spin-out and leave you struggling to get going again.

And that's a shame, because there's a lot here to offer racing fans. You've got nice graphics with several different views to choose from, ranging from inside the truck to high outside it. You've got three different vehicles to pick from (including a buggy), as well as six paint jobs. Three environments are offered, with four tracks in each one. You can also build your own track, which is a realy nice feature.

The game comes in two resolution modes, 320x240 and 640x480. Even though the game goes faster in the lower resolution, its a much better racing experience to play it in full screen mode. Sadly, graphics is not a strong point in this game (somewhere between very bad and very good) but they do look OK.

Sound effects offer no surprises here. The roar of the engines offer no realism, and definitely sound like a computer simulated truck. After the latest Ferrari engine sounds of other games, a real racing simulator fan will find these to be lacking. Taken on its on, Soda Off-Road Racing might pass for an OK racing simulation, but there are too many flaws for it to be truly great. The background music, although ok for its time, is definitely out of date. The games biggest flop in its use of sound effects is its "radio communication". It took me forever to try to figure out what my race team (who are these people?) were trying to tell me. At times, it seemed I could interpret this strange radio voice differently when it was supposedly saying the same things. Perhaps the designers felt that only racers with an excellent understanding of English would play this game. Unfortunately, it was hard at times to understand what was being said.

The Good

SODA Off Road Racing is a lot of fun, plain and simple. The driving model is one of the best I have ever experienced, and the game can be quite challenging. However, once you master the ability to steer your truck or buggy around a difficult, sloppy corner, the feeling of accomplishment is amazing. The tracks range from quite easy and mundane to difficult but realistic to twisted and quite out-of-this-world. An easy to use track editor allows you to create your own race courses. The computer AI is quite good, but can be beat with practice.

The Bad

Upon release, Sierra did SODA a disservice by releasing it with support for 3D cards with Rendition chipsets only. In my opinion, this was largely due to the fact that Sierra was producing its own Rendition video card at the time. However, as Rendition cards were only a small fraction of the 3D cards on the market at the time, most users got to see unaccelerated graphics that were quite ugly. Additional support for other cards was patched into the game later, but the game had already developed a reputation as having poor graphics. The sound in the game was also underwhelming to say the least.

The Bottom Line

Give SODA Off Road Racing a chance if you're a racing fan. The driving model makes for just plain good racing. If you're not a racing fan, you'll be disappointed by the dated graphics and sound.

Although the name may not be familiar to many gamers, SODA (Short-course Off-road Drivers Association) racing has been a long-standing favorite of late night ESPN viewers for years. A curious combination of Monster Truck Rally and Motocross, a typical SODA race consists of 17 classes of overblown 4x4's competing on short, twisting mud and dirt tracks (replete with giant leaps and other obstacles). Unlike a monster truck rally, however, the emphasis in SODA off-road is on the actual racing, not mere showmanship. As a result, SODA may be the perfect license for an off-road racing simulation... and who better to code it than the renowned design teams at Papyrus software?

Despite the lack of many Papyrus trademark design elements, SODA still manages to faithfully re-create the feel of an actual SODA racing experience - and in that respect, Papyrus and Software Allies have succeeded admirably. Vehicles slip and slide (and occasionally fly) much as one would expect over a rugged mud and dirt track. In addition, accurate suspension modeling assures that vehicles bounce and roll like a carnival thrill ride.

As if accurately simulating one off-road vehicle weren't enough, SODA racing actually includes three SODA vehicle classes (2x4 pickup, Dune Buggy, and 4x4 pickup). Each chassis has its own distinct performance characteristics, which can be tweaked further from within the in-game garage to add extra variety.

Speaking of variety, special mention should be made of the ingenious and intuitive course design feature included free of charge. Don't like the included tracks? No problem! Simply create your own in a few easy steps. In fact, you can become so absorbed designing your own tracks that it is easy to forget about the racing element altogether!

When asked how many entries were at the first event Yocum says he believes there were 47 four-wheel vehicles and over a hundred dirt bikes competing in two separate classes. Yocum said the best he could remember the entry fee was either $25 or $35 and it would be a few years before they began charging spectators $1 to get into the fairgrounds. The first event had a total purse of $1500. Winners of the event were off-road enthusiasts Wally Schauer piloting and Jim Zbella co-driving in a modified VW buggy turning in a winning time just over three hours.

The next title to cover the Midwest series was the World Series of Off-Road Racing WSORR created by noted off-roaders Jack Flannery and Doug Davis. When the World Series of Off-Road Racing WSORR became the promoters at Crandon they announced a multi-year agreement with Lucas Oil as title sponsor. The series ran in six states throughout 2007. The Traxxas TORC series became the sanctioning body next but then in 2010 ownership of the event passed to United States Auto Club USAC with Traxxas still the title sponsor. In 2011 TRAXXAS hired BlackBox Interactive, to develop and launch an interactive off-road racing game titled the TRAXXAS Short Course Shootout. The interactive game featured legendary tracks allowing fellow Wi-Fi racers to compete in Pro Truck and Buggy classes with incredibly realistic graphics and handling dynamics. Gamers earned upgrades to their racer and even win real-world prizes through YourRealRewards.com. At this writing the game was not found on the internet.

Since its inception in 1970, off-road racing in Crandon has operated as a not-for-profit club created to help support many local and regional charities. It has been a highly symbiotic relationship for both sides, offering the 400-plus acre facility access to much-needed volunteer labor during world-class race weekends in exchange for year-end financial contributions to a wide variety of local charities.

SODA Off-Road Racing is a racing-arcade game developed by Papyrus Racing Games and Software Allies. It was originally released in 1997. Sierra On-Line published the game. Most rawgers rated the game as "Meh".

SODA Off-Road Racing is available on PC.

SOTA Off Road has created a truly unique and performance-driven line of 4x4 wheels and 4x4 rims for the off-road and lifted truck wheel enthusiast. SOTA Off Road features an innovative fusion of forged wheel styling with cast wheel technology.

SODA Off-Road Racing is a racing simulation game that is inspired by the real life SODA racing events, but is far more limited than the real races. There are only three cars at your disposal and only twelve tracks in three different environments, but what saves the game is a track editor that lets you create your own tracks and the ability to physically tweak your car's engine so to increase its performance. The game has very cool high quality 3D graphic rendering, and the sense or realism is high in the fact that if you hurt your car too much by doing stunts or getting pushed around your car parts will start falling off or destruction of the transmission, which can make your car nearly inoperable. That option can be turned on or off. Overall, the game is not large and doesn't provide a lot of options, but it still pretty neat to play and the great graphics and cool soundtrack definitely helps. Sure, I recommend this game, but don't expect too much out of it or you might get disappointed. If you're for some other cool offroad racing games, try Big Red Racing, one of my favorites.

Tigerton MX, located in the eponymous Wisconsin town, is overseen by Fantasy Moto. As the track name suggests, it is typically used for motocross though four-wheel off-road vehicles also take part. Its course is natural terrain but features man-made jumps and various drops and whoops. The Wisconsin Coalition of Four Wheel Drives (WC4WD) off-roading club, whose members frequently assist SODA races, are co-hosting the race weekend in addition to organising an off-road trail ride the day after in the nearby Tigerton OHV (Off-Highway Vehicle) Park and Campground.

The two tracks join Wisconsin International Raceway on the 2023 calendar, though specific dates have not been revealed. Unlike Sunnyview and Tigerton, WIR in Kaukauna is a paved oval primarily used for stock car racing; SODA had opened the 2022 season at another NASCAR-savvy oval Slinger Super Speedway. Other rounds have yet to be announced as well, though SODA President Willie Freshour has expressed interest in a memorial Class 9 Super Buggy race to honour late Vice President Kyle Koehler. e24fc04721
