Excerpts from Aster’s Tri-Diary, Hospital Endiathetos

Day 1—

I don't remember why I'm here. Doctors haven't come to see me yet but the nurses, Cypress and Viscaria, tell me they should arrive soon. I've been asked that while recording my thoughts, if I must, to do it electronically. Is paper a vector of disease? I'll need to remember to ask whoever comes in next.

Since I was called in so unexpectedly I didn't think to pack anything. I've spent the day staring at the ceiling and the walls. I'm lucky to be in a private room, though, so the quiet is nice. Well, when it isn't being interrupted by the moaning machines and constant vital checkups.

Nothing much has been done yet. My left arm is connected up to an IV, but I don’t know what's inside. If it's anything like the last few times I've been in hospital, it's probably just saline. My right arm has an IV in it too, but it's not connected to anything. I don't know what that's about. I wish they could just take that one out. I've needed to repeatedly wipe the area down, there's so much blood escaping. No one's fixed it yet.

Well, that's not true. Viscaria has tried redoing it a few times, but Cypress told her to give it up. I don't know if I should have a preference in nurses, but it's Viscaria.

Day 1—

I don't know why I'm here. Apparently it's been a few hours now. I must have been under pretty good, because that's news to me. That doesn't explain why. Although I suppose barely being able to move is reason enough.

Viscaria brought a book in for me today. The Radical Regent of Gimcrack. I've only read the first two chapters so far, but I'm enjoying it. It's helping to clear my mind. The machine noises are a bit distracting, though.

One of the stranger things here though is that I've been told by my nurses, Viscaria and Cypress, that if I want to keep a journal then I've got to do it digitally. I wonder why. If I remember, I'll ask.

Luckily, I brought a book with me. The Radical Regent of Gimcrack. It had a bookmark at the beginning of chapter three, but I've only read the first two chapters so far. It's been good for clearing the mind. The machine noises are a bit distracting, though.

Audio Description of Video Feed in Patient 0544’s (Patient name: Aster) Room, Hospital Endiathetos

“—t should be enough. In position, Viscaria?” Cypress says, weighing an IV connected to Patient 0544’s arm in his hands. The IV is of a clear plastic, and the contents inside are a dim orange sludge.

She extends her arm toward him in response. “No, we can get more. Wait.”

“If we cut this too close, we lose him. I'm not taking responsibility for that.”

The low resolution image of Cypress closes in on a patient lying on a hospital bed. Viscaria tries to get between him and a panel attached to the bed, but is pushed out of the way, crashing into the wall. Cypress quickly types a number into a keypad on the panel, opening a small steel box to reveal a thumb-sized button, which he clicks in. A steel slab falls from the ceiling onto the patient.

Viscaria yells out to Cypress with her hands on her head. “We could have gone for longer! We're on a deadline!”

Cypress offers a bloodied hand to Viscaria, but she refuses it. “I'll get up on my own.”

Turning to the mass of carnage wreathing the bed, Cypress pulls out a Dialectic and holds it to his ear. “Cleanup in room 8. —Yes. —thank you.”

Viscaria pushes herself slowly off of the floor and proceeds to the console, retracting the slab from the bed.

“How much did we get?” Cypress asks.

“Just over five liters. Get the vessel.”

Cypress walks out of the room. After confirming that he is gone, Viscaria secrets a small amount of the orange liquid into a hidden container under her coat.

>>Fast forward 327 seconds>>

Cypress returns carrying a metal container. It appears to be an urn. Viscaria places the IV and the liquid drips into the vessel.

As this process takes time, a janitor enters room eight and thoroughly cleans the bed, making meaningless small talk with both nurses.

>>Fast forward 54000 seconds>>

A wheelchair carrying an unconscious man is rolled through the door. Cypress jacks the bed down hauls him into bed. Viscaria gently places a blanket.

When the commotion dies down, a clear view of the face is presented. Patient 0544 wakes up, whole bodied and confused.

Interview With Former Patient of Hospital Endiathetos, Anonymous

“[REDACTED], you say you saw him in the halls?”

“Yes, just wandering. Like we all did.”

“And until then you never questioned anything?”

“I think we were all used to ending up there for some reason or other. I never questioned it.”

“What about family members? Documents show they made visits.”

“They did.”

“They never questioned why you were there? Nothing was being done to them.”

“I don't know.”

“Was it always the same two nurses?”

“We were all assigned our own set. I don't recall anybody else mentioning [REDACTED] or [REDACTED].”

“I see. Tell me more about— Aster.”

“From the memories I have, he was there for the same reasons as us.”

“Yes. But he did something.”

“He figured it out. Why we were really there and— and…”

“And what?”

“How long.”

“Which was?”

“Five years.”

“And why were you there?”

“Medical advancement.”

“Can you tell me what kind of medical advancements?”

“I think we all had different purposes. Mine was— it was— Yes, vision! Improving human vision for night use.”

“In other words, night vision without a need for a HUD. Can you recall how it was done?”

“If— If I concentrate.”

“Tell it only as fast as you're comfortable with.”

“Thank you. It was horrendous. Repeated everyday. They plucked out my eyes. Over and over and over— all over again and again.”

“Breathe, [REDACTED]. Big breaths now.”

“I'm sorry.”

“No, don't worry about it. Tell me, how is your vision now?”

“It was a success.”

“For you?”

“Yes.”

“But—”

“The depths. You don't believe.”

“No, I do.”

“Turn off the lights.— Now hold your fingers up. Don't tell me how many.”

“Alright.”

“Four. Again.”

“Okay.”

“Seven. Again.”

“Go.”

“One.”

“Holy shit. Colin, shut down the recording!”

“On i—”
