Second International Conference - Lviv 2018 Sociolinguistic knowledge as an instrument of forming new security culture: Ukraine and the world

22–23 November 2018

Upholding the well-established traditions of annual Ukrainian Sociolinguistic Seminars (2004-2015) and building on the notable success of the First International Conference - Lviv 2016 Sociolinguistic knowledge as an instrument of forming new security culture: Ukraine and the world, our new academic forum seeks to provide a viable platform for researchers and practitioners to articulate and exchange stimulating ideas in the field of sociolinguistics and national security. Participants are expected to engage in a constructive dialogue and to follow the discussions initiated by the scholars in 2015-2016 during the academic events held with the assistance of the NATO Information and Documentation Centre in Ukraine.

The purpose of 2018 Conference is to discuss a wide range of issues related to the role of language in contemporary social processes in Ukraine and other countries, to facilitate the exchange of relevant experience, the development of fresh ideas, and the production of clear recommendations in order to accomplish the tasks defined by the National Security Strategy of Ukraine (2015).


Questions for discussion:

1. Language and society: interdisciplinary analysis and research trends in sociolinguistics.

2. Interaction between language and national security. Theoretical and applied aspects of analysis.

3. International communication and hybrid threats.

4. Language and identity, language and ideology, language and culture.

5. Interaction between language and politics as language policy and language of politics. Political communication.

6. Language situation: status and functions of languages, media attitudes, and government action.

7. Linguistic landscape as a marker of society and government.

8. Language and education, church, business, health care, army, family, etc.

9. Interpersonal communication, communication between different social groups (in the data of sociological surveys, discourse of traditional mass media and social media, art discourse, etc.).

10. Language, public opinion, propaganda: the past and the present.

11. Language and migration policy.

12. Theory and practice of teaching sociolinguistics.

13. Security dimension of humanitarian education.


Abstract submission

Abstracts of no more than 300 words should be sent by October 15, 2018 in .doc format to our e-mail address: socioconference2018@gmail.com. Abstracts will be reviewed anonymously and notification of acceptance will be sent no later than October 17, 2018. Abstracts will be published prior to the conference.

The preliminary deadline for submission of completed papers is February 1, 2019. Texts are to be sent to our e-mail address: socioconference2018@gmail.com. The papers will be published: a) in the next issue of Language and Society 2019 (since 2015, the articles of the journal has been indexed in Index Copernicus); b) in Bulletin of Lviv University. International Relations Series, 2018-2019.

Conference languages: Ukrainian and English, and Polish.

Languages of abstracts and articles: Ukrainian and English.
