Non-verbal Communication Skills
Non-verbal Communication Skills
Previously, I have studied verbal communication skills and this week’s topic touches on non-verbal communication skills. In this topic, I learned that non-verbal communication plays a vital role in human interaction and provides depth and subtlety to our daily spoken words consisting of gestures, posture, facial expression, eye contact, vocal tone, proxemics, territory, touch and even appearance. Upon reflection on my experiences, I can see how frequently my body language expresses feelings and opinions even though my words may imply the opposite such as sustaining eye contact and employing open gestures to make confidence and attentiveness. In contrast, crossed arms and a lack of involvement can unintentionally signal disinterest. Grasping the concepts of non-verbal communication has enhanced my insight into how these subtle signals influence perceptions in personal interactions.
Besides that, I also learned about the importance of non-verbal communication in its capacity to support, elevate, or even oppose verbal messages. It acts as a connector for handling perceptions, forming connections and conveying feelings. Furthermore, I realized the significance of proxemics based on personal distance and haptics based on touch in fostering comfort and trust during interactions. Likewise, appearance and chronemics especially communication related to time are crucial elements in creating impressions as they frequently act as the initial layer of evaluation in both social and professional environments. This dynamic allows me to be more deliberate in harmonizing my nonverbal cues with my spoken intentions to promote authenticity and connection.
Just like verbal communication skills, mastering nonverbal communication is also a crucial skill for both personality and professional development. I can see that to enhance my skills, I need to focus on observing and understanding more about nonverbal signals in others while sharpening my capability to make nonverbal messages. Other than that, being aware of cultural variances and circumstances of interaction will improve my skills as well. Lastly, I can say that this topic has enhanced my abilities and deepened my relationships by promoting clarity, empathy and mutual respect in daily interaction with friends, family and other people.
