Snow Bros.[a] is a 1990 platform arcade video game originally developed by Toaplan first published in Japan, then in North America by Romstar and later in Europe. Starring the eponymous snowmen twins Nick and Tom, players are tasked with travelling through 50 stages, throwing and building snowballs, jumping on and off platforms to navigate level obstacles while dodging and defeating monsters in order to rescue the princesses Puripuri and Puchipuchi from captivity.[1] Although first launched in arcades, the game was later ported across multiple platforms, each one being created by different third-party developers and featuring several changes or additions compared with the original version. Conversions for various microcomputers were in development but none were officially released to the public.

Each player can throw snow at enemies until each one is completely covered and turns into a snowball, however partially covered enemies in snow cannot move until they shake it off.[1][2][3][4] Once an enemy has been turned into a snowball, players can roll or throw the snowball, which will rebound off of walls until eventually shattering against a wall.[1][2][3][4] Any enemies the snowball rolls into are eliminated and other stationary snowballs start rolling when the rolling snowball touches them.[1][2][3][4] If players manage to take out all enemies by kicking one snowball (this one snowball may be used to make others bounce around as well and increase the chances to pull this trick off), bonus money will fall from the sky.[2][3][4] If the player takes too much time to complete a level, an evil pumpkin head will come and try to kill the players. The game hosts a number of hidden bonus secrets to be found, which are crucial for reaching high-scores to obtain extra lives.[2][3][4] If a single player is downed, their character is immediately respawned at the location they start at on every stage. The Sega Mega Drive version was released only in Japan by Tengen on 28 May 1993 and the only console version of the game to be developed by Toaplan.[28] It features a new opening story sequence at the start of the game, as well as 20 additional levels set after the original 50 levels, in which the player switches controls from Nick and Tom to the twin princesses Puripuri and Puchipuchi after the snowmen twins themselves get kidnapped by a new adversary. The Mega Drive version is included on both the Japanese and Asian versions of the Sega Genesis Mini.[29]

In 2002, a Mexican company known as Syrmex Electronics created a hack of the original Snow Bros. running on similar hardware called Snow Brothers 3: Magical Adventure, replacing Nick and Tom with soccer players who shoot soccer balls instead of snowballs, while featuring levels very similar to those of the original despite new graphics and artwork added to the levels' backgrounds. It was the only game developed by Syrmex and never existed as physical hardware in arcades; it is only playable via arcade machine emulators such as MAME.[74][75]

Killing all the monsters on a level with a single snowball causes money bonuses, worth 10,000 points, to fall down, but sometimes a glowing cake bonus will appear instead. When the cake is collected, the game stops and four blue snowball creatures appear for a short time. If these enemies are killed, they each provide a letter: "S","N","O" or "W". Collect all four of these letters for an extra life. The glowing cake can also appear at other times during the game.

Snow Bros does not have the number of power-ups of Bubble Bobble but the ones present are just as impactful. Killing multiple enemies in a row drops different colored potions in addition to food. These potions grant super speed, instant snowballs, and increased throwing range. Its hard to line up enemies consistently to earn one of these but at least they last until death.

Being as most of the stages are set up as a series of cascading platforms, it only makes sense that the Snow Bros. method of killing monsters consists of taking said roll-able snowballs, and sending them careening into other monsters.

Upon steamrolling monsters with a snowball, the resulting pile of monster corpses transform into food products (snowmen are gluttons) or colored medicine bottles, each of which provide the players with a number of different power-ups.

The original version of Snow Bros. features 50 levels, with a boss battle centered around making snowballs out of regular enemies to then launch at the big guy (or big guys, on occasion) every 10th of those. Not much was made of the story in the original. You were a snowman or snowmen, and you threw snowballs. Fire melted you, because again, snow-based person. There were multiple ports that added all kinds of canon changes to the tale, though, or at least introductory and end-game cutscenes that fleshed out a little more about how these snowmen were actually regular old princes until they were cursed by an evil king who they then set off to defeat to get their old identities (and princess girlfriends) back from.

Snow Bros. is both an easy and a difficult game. It\u2019s easy to get into, as you don\u2019t have much to learn in terms of what you can do to succeed: you are a snowman, and you throw snowballs at enemies. When you throw enough snowballs at a foe, they become a big snowball, and you can then roll the ball around, jump on top of it, or push it off a ledge and send it flying at other monsters like the wintry ball of death that it is.
