Background to Shelf & Northowram Local Plan Forum

Our Ward Councillors arranged a meeting at Shelf Village Hall in 2016 to discuss plans for 3000 new houses that were proposed to be built in Shelf, Northowram and Claremount as part of Calderdale Council's Draft Local Plan.

Over 180 residents attended that original meeting and after that meeting, a small group of residents came together to form the SNLPF. We are not planners or solicitors or experts in housing - just concerned residents who want to keep our villages as villages.

We have a committee drawn from many backgrounds, who all live in either Northowram or Shelf and who have done much research and investigation. We have delivered leaflets and attended meetings and other local plan examinations in public.

We have learned much from our research and from collaboration with Friends of the Earth (FoE) and the CPRE [Campaign to Protect Rural England].

We have regularly attended Council meetings, Cabinet meetings, Local Plan working party meetings and also attended the Kirklees Published Local Plan Examination in Public so we could understand the process for our Examination in Public.

We have spent many hours on research, visiting sites, taking photos, trawling through policies and speaking with residents. We have worked with experts on a raft of different subjects, all to add to our knowledge and skills when looking at the Published Local Plan.

None of us want to lose the Greenbelt - once it's gone, it's gone forever.
