Hey Ubuntu users. How are you all? Want to type in your native language in Ubuntu?
Here is solution for typing in your native language. Ubuntu introduce Intelligent Input Bus (i-Bus) concept in Ubuntu 11.04 version. And continue in all upcoming versions.
In Ms office you can easily type in your native language with just install some IME(indic) tool. On windows it’s very easy. However google discontinue its offline service called “Google Indic Input tool” but still you can find Gujarati Indic input or Hindi Indic Input tools for windows but for ubuntu it’s difficult.
Ubuntu provide you many Indian languages but understanding of keyboard layout is difficult and wants more practice. SCIM IME was the most popular on Linux but now they introduced new architecture called IBus. It is next generation framework for linux os. It affords complete featured and consumer friendly enter approach user interface.
So here I will teach you how you can type in Hindi or Guajarati language in Ubuntu 19.04.(will also work for other regional languages)
Follow the steps:
Step1:
First install Ibus. Type following command in terminal and hit Enter
sudo apt install ibus-m17n
Here “ibus-m17n” is package for Indic languages
Step 2: Enter following commands according to your system after step 1 and hit enter
#(For KDE desktop use this)
sudo apt-get install ibus-qt4
#(For GNOME desktop.For Ubuntu 19.04 use this)
sudo apt-get install ibus-gtk scommand)
Setp 3: Enter this command for configure Ibus and hit enter
sudo apt-get install im-config
Step 4: Now in terminal type “im-config” and hit enter popup dialog box will open. Click Ok
Step 5:
Select ibus and click ok.
Step 6:
Now open settings and select Region and Language and select Manage Installed language
Step 7:
Select install/Remove language. New language list will open. Select your language which you want to install. Here is select Gujarati and Hindi. And clicks apply.
Step 8:
After that click on ” +” sign in Input Source Section
Step 9:
New Pop up box will open. Select Gujarati (if not Click on 3 Vertical Dots and type Gujarati then select it). Now you can see multiple options for Guajarati language input.
Here we choose third option. Gujarati (itras(m17n)) and click Add.
(For Hindi choose Hindi (itras(m17n))
Now our system is ready to type in Guajarati language.
Step 10:
For change language input select “Super+space Bar” key.(Super means windows key) to enable the IME, select the language you want to input and start typing. IBus-m17n supports transliteration for few Indic langugaes like Tamil, Hindi.,Gujarati, Kannad, Malayalam etc...
