Privacy Policy for Smolder
Last updated: 2026
Smolder is a single-player dice story. It runs on your phone, keeps its records on your phone, and asks nothing about you. This document says exactly what leaves the device, when, and why.
1. Nothing is gathered about you
Smolder has no account, no sign-in and no profile. It does not read your contacts, your location, your photos or your calendar beyond today's date, which it uses only to seed tonight's story. There are no analytics libraries, no advertising identifiers and no crash-reporting services inside the app. We cannot see who plays, how often, or what happened to their heroes.
2. Where your nights live
Every hero, every hour of every night, your Hall of Ashes, your Seed Book, the Codex you have uncovered, your streak, badges and settings are written to the app's private container on your device. Nothing is copied to a server we run, because we run none. If you delete Smolder, the container is deleted with it and the ashes are gone for good.
3. The Fire — optional narration from OpenAI
Smolder plays fully offline with its built-in scene texts. If you turn on AI Narration in Settings and accept the notice that follows, the app sends a request to OpenAI (the gpt-4o-mini model) once per hour of play and once for the epitaph. Each request carries only story material: your hero's name, archetype and trait, the genre, the hour, the scene template, the three actions, the result of the last roll, a short summary of the previous two scenes, and your Mild/Grim preference. No device identifiers, no other heroes and nothing outside the current night are included. OpenAI processes that text to return prose and does not receive anything that identifies you. The app asks OpenAI not to store the exchange, and OpenAI's own handling of requests is described at https://openai.com/policies/privacy-policy. Switch AI Narration off and no request is ever made.
4. Reminders
If you enable the Dusk Reminder, the app schedules one local notification a day at the time you choose. The notification is created and delivered by iOS on the device; it does not pass through any server.
5. Removing what you have made
Because nothing is held anywhere but on your device, you are always in control of it. Forget a single hero from the Hall of Ashes, wipe everything with Reset Progress in Settings, or uninstall the app to remove every trace.
6. Younger players
Smolder is interactive fiction written for readers twelve and older. It is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect anything from anyone — there is simply no collection.
7. When this document changes
If a future version of Smolder changes what leaves the device, this policy will be revised and the date at the top will move. The current text always describes the current app.
