Principal's Update: News You Can Use
Greetings from the Principal,
This has been an exciting month of celebrating reading at Smith ES. In early February we launched our Masked Reader, which has been recognized by DoDEA Connects, and shared with DoDEA schools world-wide. Masked Reader results are in: 3rd place: our Fish – Ms. Bridges; 2nd place: our Nugget – Dr. Longoria; and 1st place: our Blueberry – Ms. Stotz! Congratulations to all of our faculty participants. It was an honor to be a part of such an inspiring event. We started the week with some fun dress up days and finished off an amazing week of Read Across America with a Vocabulary Parade for all grades. We had more than 100 parents join us for the parade on Thursday morning and afternoon. The yearbook was able to photograph every student who participated in the event. If you have a media hold, the photograph will not be published. Go to the News You Can Use to see some of the exciting and very detailed Vocabulary Parade costumes. There are also a few Reading Selfie's mixed in of students reading at home during Read Across America.
Spring Picture Day is Tuesday, March 11, 2025. More Information can be found on the PTO Facebook page or in the PTO section of the News You Can Use.
It's time for School Year 2025-2026 Spring Re-registration! Parents must submit a re-registration to indicate whether each student is staying in DoDEA or leaving their current location. Parents should log into the DoDEA Student Information System (DSIS) Family Portal at https://dodeasis.myfollett.com/aspen/logon.do to submit each student re-registration request. The re-registration process also provides a quick and easy way for families to update information (contacts, Sponsor's employment status, student health) if the student is returning.
Below are a few tips to ensure success:
- Make sure you are using the Current Student Re-Registration section in the Family Portal.
- Expired or expiring orders? Upload documents on the Documents tab as part of the re-registration process (i.e., new orders, extensions, etc.).
- Update only information that has changed since last school year.
- Be sure to review and update all contact information for every contact. You will also be able to indicate whether an emergency contact should be added or removed.
Please complete the re-registration process as soon as possible. The information collected during re-registration will be used to determine each student's continued eligibility, as well as plan staffing and resource needs for the coming school year. After your re-registration submission has been reviewed, the School Registrar will contact you if additional information is required.
The classroom teacher with the highest re-registrations at the end of the 3rd grading period on March 28th will have a Purple UP Pizza Party with the Principal during MOMC. So, Parents even if you are not returning, please complete re-registration and simply let us know you are PCSing at the end of the school year.
Note: If the student is enrolled on a space available basis, the school will contact you for additional requirements. Re-registration is not confirmation that space is available for the next school year.
If you encounter issues, please contact the School Registrar, Mr. Robert.Woods@dodea.edu

Transportation, Universal Pre-K Arrival, and Kiss & Ride
Please remember that we have staff and adult volunteers to assist with Kiss & Ride drop-off. Please stay in your car or pull over during these times. Children will be unloaded on the “sidewalk side” only.
The Kiss & Ride Zone stops at the crosswalk.
ENTRANCE TO THE BUILDING OPENS AT 0745.
_______________________________________________
There is no Kiss-N-Ride option
for Universal Pre-K Students
Parents of Universal Pre-K Students are required to escort these grade level students to either the cafeteria or classroom upon arrival. Please do not drop your student off outside the gate and allow them to walk into school.
Kinder parents can drop off in the Kiss-N-Ride between 0740-0800. Just pull up to the cones, and one of our friendly staff will assist your child out of the car and the Kinder Aide will escort them and their peers to the classroom. We kindly ask Kindergarten parents to avoid entering the building during arrival and dismissal. This is a time for building independence in our young learners. As Kinder Aides try to prepare the students for dismissal parents in the hallway can be a safety concern as parents are taking students outside of the official drop zones.
Lime Street is a One-Way road and the speed limit is 15 kilometers or 6 MPH.
Arrival: Morning drop off in the Kiss-N-Ride area is in the right lane, after dropping your student, please zipper into the left lane. There are limited parking spaces in front of the school for AM drop off, all of the other spaces are beyond the main entrance.
Dismissal: Afternoon dismissal is often impeded by parents parking in the right lane prior to dismissal. There is no standing or parking in the Kiss-N-Ride lane or in front of the school during dismissal. Dismissal generally takes about 10-12 minutes. If you student is not ready when you arrive, please loop around and return to keep traffic moving smoothly. Thank you for your patience.
Early Checkout: Please avoid checking students out of school unless there is a family emergency or to attend scheduled appointments. Picking up students between 1330 and 1420 without an appointment causes a considerable disruption to the learning environment for your student and classmates. Help us protect the learning environment for everyone, stay in school the whole day.
Warning Concerning Busses: Baumholder Military Police would like us to be reminded that in contrast with German Traffic Laws which allow drivers to pass school busses on the economy, AE Pam 190-34/USAFE Pam 31-206 dated 16 Nov 10 and AER 190-1 Section 4-5: Regarding School Busses (6b) Passing states, Drivers approaching or following buses that have stopped for passengers to get on or off on property under the control of U.S. Forces (for example, housing areas) must always stop. They may proceed only after the bus has begun to move. Additionally, there are voided parking spaces near crosswalks which are no longer authorized for drop off parking. These spots allow drivers to observe students in the crosswalk without being blocked by a parked car. Safety for everyone is our concern and we appreciate the support of our Baumholder Military Police.
PARKING INFORMATION: Parking is a challenge and our neighbors are notifying us regularly that parents are parking in designated housing areas during morning drop off and afternoon pickup. These parking spaces are reserved for tenants only and military police may issue a warning or ticket if you are parked there even for a few minutes.
