Subang, 14 October 2022 – To commemorate World Smile Day and Cleft Awareness Month, students from the Diploma in Communication and Diploma in Interactive New Media at Sunway College, organised a charitable fund-raising event for the Cleft Lip & Palate Association Malaysia (CLAPAM) - the only nationwide organisation in Malaysia supporting matters related to cleft at Sunway College Boulevard.
The event was officiated by Puan Adawiah Norli Yusuf, Director of Sunway Diploma Studies, with an opening speech about acts of kindness and the importance of happiness, which followed with a series of dance and stage performances by participating Sunway students, committee members and visitors from within the community and other universities and colleges. Present at the event was 8FM radio announcer, Dino, and 8FM news presenter, Chin Win How. Throughout the day, the campus hosted a unique collection of infographic stations to raise awareness by providing information and fun facts about World Smile Day, and fun games such as ball pong, merchandise booths, appreciation booth for participants to leave kind messages for others.
World Smile Day is celebrated annually on the first Friday in October since 1999, to recover the original meaning and intent of the iconic smiling face symbol, encouraging people to act gently and make others smile. It is a day for smiles and gestures of goodwill. With that, the organiser hoped to bring change and create more awareness on the importance of happiness and the cleft community. A total of RM2971.17 was raised, announced by Executive Director of Sunway, Prof. Teo Ee Sing, who gave the concluding remarks with the announcement that the proceeds will aid members of the community that are diagnosed with the medical issue as the fund raised can be used for life-saving surgery and cleft care. So, together we can all smile again.
