This Privacy Policy is designed to help you understand how the SmartBookmark Chrome extension (referred to as "the Extension") collects, uses, and protects your information. We are committed to safeguarding your privacy and ensuring your data is handled securely and responsibly.
The Extension is designed with your privacy in mind. We collect only limited information, and only when necessary, to provide and enhance your bookmark management experience.
Web Page Information (URL and Title): When you explicitly click on the Extension's icon in your browser toolbar, we temporarily access the URL and title of the currently active tab. This information is solely used to automatically pre-fill the bookmark creation form, making it convenient for you to quickly save the current page. This information is neither stored nor transmitted to any external servers.
Browser Bookmark Data: The Extension accesses your browser's bookmarks. This is central to the Extension's core functionality, allowing you to manage (add, edit, delete, search, categorize) your bookmarks within Chrome through the Extension. All bookmark data remains stored locally within your browser, and the Extension does not transmit your bookmark data to any external servers.
Local Settings Data: The Extension may store a small amount of user preferences on your local device, such as UI layout, sorting preferences, or theme choices. These settings are stored exclusively within your local browser and are not transmitted to any external servers.
Any information we collect is strictly used for the following purposes:
To Provide Core Functionality: To enable the management of bookmarks, including adding, editing, deleting, searching, and categorizing.
To Enhance User Experience: To automatically pre-fill the URL and title for a smoother bookmarking process.
To Save User Preferences: To remember your local settings and provide you with a personalized experience.
The Extension will not use any of your information for advertising, tracking, selling, or sharing with third parties.
We do not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer your personal information to any third parties.1
Exceptions include:
Legal Requirements: If compelled by law or to comply with legal processes (such as a court order or subpoena).
Protection of Rights: When we believe it's necessary to investigate, prevent, or take action regarding illegal activities, suspected fraud, situations involving potential threats to the safety of any person, violations of our terms of service, or as otherwise required by law.2
To function properly, the Extension requests the following permissions. We commit to requesting only the minimum necessary permissions required to provide its features:
bookmarks:
Justification: This is the core permission for the Extension, allowing us to access, read, create, modify, and delete your browser bookmarks. Without this permission, the Extension cannot fulfill its primary function as a bookmark manager.
activeTab:
Justification: Allows the Extension to temporarily access the URL and title of the currently active tab only when the user explicitly clicks on the Extension's icon. This is used to automatically pre-fill the bookmark creation form, making it convenient for users to quickly add bookmarks. This permission is context-limited and does not grant persistent access to web content.
storage:
Justification: Used to store the Extension's configuration and user preferences (such as UI theme, sorting options) within your local browser. This data is stored locally only and is not uploaded.
We take reasonable precautions to protect your information from unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction.3 As this Extension primarily operates on your local device and does not transmit your sensitive bookmark data to external servers, the security of your data primarily relies on the security of your device.
This Extension is not directed at children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from4 them. If we become aware that we have inadvertently collected information from a child under 13, we will take immediate steps to delete5 such information.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted6 on this page, and the "Last Updated" date at the top will be revised. We encourage you to review this policy periodically for any updates. Your continued use of the Extension signifies your acceptance of the revised policy.
