At SLST - East’s first meeting of the school year, a full agenda of business-related items filled the time at Jennie F. Snapp Middle School. The group of 13 members chose chairpersons and planned participation in a number of 2018-2019 events, including a local sci-fi convention, a new (to the organization) STEAM outreach opportunity, a holiday display at a local museum, a hands-on literacy event, a student poetry recitation, a youth writers’ contest, a Pride event, and more. Attendees also discussed providing NYSED-approved professional development that would earn participants CTLE hours at a couple of upcoming meetings. Rather than focus on a previously-suggested mini-conference as a way to provide additional professional development to its members, it was decided that the time, effort, and money will be used to host an author event. A motion was passed updating the language in the organization’s by-laws to include retired library professionals as potential officers. The freshly-redesigned website was revealed (http://sites.google.com/view/slst-east/) and members agreed that the store for SLST - East apparel should be reopened this fall. A productive meeting (that still managed to end on time!), for sure.

Monday, January 14th saw twelve SLST - East members gathered at the Broome County Public Library for the organization’s second meeting of the school year. In addition to the standard business of previous meeting minute approval, the Treasurer’s report, and a review of this school year’s meeting schedule, attention was paid to SLST - East’s participation in the Home for the Holidays event at the Roberson Museum and Science Center. Though the chairperson for the event was unable to attend the meeting, those members who participated reported out and the decision was made to purchase a new pre-lit tree for next year’s event. Reminders were made regarding several upcoming events, more discussion moved the planning of a future author event forward, and an update on the two newly-formed SLST - East book clubs was given (the upper elementary/middle grade group will be reading Chasing Secrets by Gennifer Choldenko while the young adult folks read The Museum of Extraordinary Things by Alice Hoffman). Alicia Sherman, SLST - East Vice-President and Instructional Support Specialist in Library Media with Broome-Tioga BOCES, reminded folks about upcoming professional development opportunities through BT BOCES and provided specifics regarding SLST - East merchandise. The group wrapped up this productive business meeting with a booktalking bonanza, SLST - East style wherein each member shared a new or favorite book to booktalk to students or their librarian colleagues.

In addition to a regular business meeting that included a debrief of past events and planning for future ones and a vote that approved updated language in the Constitution & By-Laws concerning dues as our NYLA Round Table status made the previous version moot, SLST - East Treasurer Kathy Starks then gave a presentation, On Beyond Docs: Google Keep for Notetaking and Slides for Presentation, Collaboration, and Visual Literacy. Participants (who received CTLE credit for their attendance) were provided with hands-on experience utilizing these two tools, with time given to explore and discuss potential uses, both professionally and personally. Chrome extensions and add-ons were also explored related to these and other tools.

At a quick business meeting preceding an end-of-year celebration at MJ’s Bar and Restaurant in Owego, SLST - East members (1) debriefed a few immediate past events and finalized plans for Pride Palooza, the last event of this school year, (2) congratulated the recipients of the Cheryl Naslund Memorial Scholarship, (3) elected Annarose Foley and Tracey Cornwell as President and Secretary, respectively, for the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years, and (4) discussed the pros and cons of hosting the NYLA/SSL Conference in Binghamton in 2021, ultimately deciding on moving forward with Annarose Foley and Kathy Starks as co-chairs.

At SLST - East’s first meeting of the school year, a full agenda of business-related items filled the time at Union-Endicott High School. Attendees agreed that the organization will make donations to both the Texas and Florida Library Associations to support hurricane relief efforts. The group chose chairpersons and planned participation in a number of 2017-2018 events, including a local sci-fi convention, a holiday display at a local museum, a youth writers’ contest, a student poetry recitation, a Pride event, and more. Attendees also discussed renting a bus to transport members to the NYLA/SSL Conference in Long Island this coming May and possibly providing NYSED-approved professional development that would earn participants CTLE hours at an upcoming meeting. Finally, SLST - East’s President, Annarose Foley, introduced the idea of hosting a mini-conference in October 2018 as a way to lay the groundwork for potentially hosting the NYLA/SSL Conference in the future.

SLST – East’s second meeting of the school year was held in the Owego Apalachin Middle School Library. The business agenda began with a Treasurer’s report that reminded meeting attendees to check their membership status in the Round Table via the NYLA website and discussed the dues increase. After an update from SLST – West, the group then shared ideas about purchasing promotional items such as clothing, bookmarks, and more with the newly-redesigned, high-resolution version of the organization’s logo. In addition, attendees decided to rent a bus to transport SLST – East members as well as other school librarians from across New York State to the NYLA/SSL Conference on Long Island in May of this year. The group also chose a chairperson to facilitate the annual Cheryl Naslund Memorial Scholarship. Finally, members thanked everyone for their successful participation in several community events, including Home for the Holidays and BookFest. After the business meeting concluded, attendees participated in and received CTLE credit for a professional development session called Locked in the Library: A Digital Breakout EDU Library Orientation given by Annarose Foley.

Coming together again in the library of Chenango Bridge Elementary School at SLST - East’s third meeting of the school year were the group’s core set of ten members and one intern (and future core member!). Following the Treasurer’s report was a brief discussion of the official Round Table roster as reported on the NYLA website and the fact that not all dues-paying members appear to be listed. This potentially has something to do with how they renew their membership and whether or not they select to be listed in a directory. Unfortunately, this means that even the executive board does not have an accurate list of members. President Annarose Foley has contacted Jeremy Johannesen at NYLA for clarification. Vice-President Alicia Sherman checked in with the group regarding the purchase of promotional items (namely, clothing) with the organization’s logo and hopes to have them ready to go for members to wear this summer at the Educational Leadership Institute. Because there were no applicants for the Cheryl Naslund Memorial Scholarship to attend the NYLA/SSL Conference in Long Island (a happy fact because BT BOCES SLS Coordinator Nicole Waskie-Laura provided scholarships for all interested parties), SLST - East members decided to make two scholarships available for the summer Institute instead. Secretary Liz Howes is coordinating that effort. Logistics for the upcoming conference were ironed out, including the SLST - East-chartered bus, dinner on Thursday evening, the group’s Knickerbocker Basket Raffle donation (Cinco de Mayo-themed!), and a Twitter takeover to keep absent members updated. Everyone was reminded that long-time member and soon-to-be retiree Lonna Pierce is hosting the Eleanor Henricks Annual Countywide Poetry Recitation for Children on Saturday, April 28th (look for the summary of that in the next report) and that submissions for the PBS Kids/WSKG Youth Writers Contests are due by April 30th. Plans were made for Pride Palooza in June, RoberCon in September, and STEAMfest in October (a new event for SLST - East!), as well as the last meeting of the 2018 - 2019 school year in June. A nominating committee for the upcoming officer election was formed and meeting attendees were reminded that they can expect at least two SLST - East-sponsored professional development opportunities in the coming year and that they should consider presenting. A bit of a discussion about a mini-conference that the group would like hold next fall was started and will continue with the planning committee this summer. A productive meeting to be sure!

Thirteen SLST – East members gathered for a fourth and final business meeting of the school year, recognition of retirees, and end-of-year celebration at the Blue Dolphin Diner in Apalachin. Based on the overwhelming approval of the newly-redesigned logo, clothing had been ordered and was distributed at the meeting to the delight of those who made the purchase. There was a call for additional items (sticky notes, stationary, stickers, and the like) that could be used to promote the organization, but also to thank current members and recruit new ones. Alicia Sherman and Kathy Starks were reelected as Vice-President and Treasurer, respectively. Though uncontested, their commitment to SLST – East and the profession is notable and much appreciated. The Eleanor Henricks Countywide Poetry Recitation for Children and PBS Kids/WSKG Youth Writers Contests were recapped and planning for Pride Palooza and WSKG’s The Great American Read event was finalized. Future events and meetings were briefly mentioned so that the meeting could be adjourned for the recognition of retirees. Sue Carey, Lonna Pierce, Debbie Sluzar, and Sandy Stiles were honored by members with personalized remembrances (a poem even!), cards, plants, and gift cards before a general end-of-year celebration commenced. Good food and good friends marked the end of another productive school year.
