As we are midway through the 2026 year, lets give you an update on the current state of Skylight.
1. New Update structure "Skylight Version 2"
We plan to introduce a new update system for future editions of Skylight. The plan is to follow conventional semantic versioning: major releases (X.0) are like Skylight Cerulean, and minor releases (0.X) will be the main "releases" for at least the meantime. For example, the version of Skylight currently in development is 1.1 instead of 2.0. Any additional updates/revisions are marked as patches (0.0.X). We think this new update system will simplify future releases and keep Skylight as feature-complete as possible. Having a major release at this stage of Skylight's development would prevent future innovations and could compromise Skylight's long-term release schedule.
2. Slow and small updates, one at a time.
With the previous paragraph in mind, Skylight "1" will most likely be the version number for a while. We do not plan another complete rebuild of Skylight any time soon, which would validate a major release change. That doesn't mean major features aren't planned. There's always room to build off of what's already made. Some of the major focuses for Skylight's next major update are to complete apps and unify Skylight's ecosystem. Some apps have been completely reworked, and plenty of Google Slides' first innovations will be introduced. We don't expect every release to be as large as this one; that just wouldn't be realistic, but we plan to keep Skylight at the bleeding edge of operating systems on Google Slides. With that in mind, updates will likely be small and spread out as "Skylight 1" continues.
