Skylar Davidson

Hello!  I'm Skylar Davidson.  I'm an Associate Professor of Sociology at Chattanooga State Community College, and I also occasionally teach online at UMass Amherst, which is where I got my PhD and where I taught while in graduate school.  I have experience teaching in a wide variety of subfields of sociology, and some of my favorite topics to teach about are technology and work; race, class, and gender; education; and age.

I am a futurist, meaning that I believe the future does not simply "happen" but instead is created with every choice we make.  For this reason, I teach with the active learning framework, meaning that instead of memorizing facts to regurgitate on tests, my students spend most of their time using social science research to suggest improvements to the status quo and build solutions to current and anticipated problems.  My own research concerns ways of improving active learning approaches, including adapting futures studies methods for classroom use, conducting roleplays, and incorporating art into class activities.
