The dancers of Philadelphia Ballet comprise a talented and unique group of accomplished performers. Our artists come from all walks of life, hailing from regions as far flung as Cuba and Japan to everywhere in between. They dance with passion, verve, and remarkable athleticism, providing a rich and diverse tapestry of artistic expression.

Eating disorders in dancers are thought to be common, but the exact rates remain to be clarified. The aim of this study is to systematically compile and analyse the rates of eating disorders in dancers. A literature search, appraisal and meta-analysis were conducted. Thirty-three relevant studies were published between 1966 and 2013 with sufficient data for extraction. Primary data were extracted as raw numbers or confidence intervals. Risk ratios and 95% confidence intervals were calculated for controlled studies. The overall prevalence of eating disorders was 12.0% (16.4% for ballet dancers), 2.0% (4% for ballet dancers) for anorexia, 4.4% (2% for ballet dancers) for bulimia and 9.5% (14.9% for ballet dancers) for eating disorders not otherwise specified (EDNOS). The dancer group had higher mean scores on the EAT-26 and the Eating Disorder Inventory subscales. Dancers, in general, had a higher risk of suffering from eating disorders in general, anorexia nervosa and EDNOS, but no higher risk of suffering from bulimia nervosa. The study concluded that as dancers had a three times higher risk of suffering from eating disorders, particularly anorexia nervosa and EDNOS, specifically designed services for this population should be considered.

But I was never a confident dancer. I relied heavily on the praise of my teachers and casting to feel my self-worth. And over time, the micro-failures that dancers must overcome each day started to chip away at me. In my last year at SFBS, I would routinely cry in the studio. A missed pirouette or a class where I felt invisible to the teacher would completely dismantle me. Concerned teachers would stop me in the hallway with words of support, but my grit was too far gone.

While dealing with back-to-back stress fractures, I was forced to sit in every single class that I missed for eight weeks and watch my peers surpass me. Sage dance therapist Dr. Bonnie Robson recently told me that despite the fact that injury is the most common reason for onset for depression in dancers, most injured dancers will see doctors, physical therapists and Pilates instructors while never seeing a mental health professional.

In the years since, I have had the privilege of conducting hundreds of interviews for articles I have written in Dance Magazine and other Dance Media publications. I have the handful of great dance therapists in the country piled up in my recent call list. My conversations with them and other dancers and dance-support professionals, combined with my own experience, has lead me to an unavoidable truth: I believe that dance institutions are failing their dancers with a lack of support for mental health.

The Healthy Dancers' Clinic at ODC, through the volunteer collaboration of academic health care professionals, strives to improve the well-being and healthcare of the dance community through education, musculoskeletal screening, integration of health services, enlightened treatment protocols and injury data analysis, hoping to culminate in prevention. The LEAP (Liberal Education for Arts Professionals) Program is a Bachelor's in Performing Arts online degree completion program uniquely designed for current and former professional dancers. LEAP provides remote and affordable higher education of exceptional quality with a part-time, low-impact class schedule.

The LEAP Core Curriculum is delivered on Zoom by Saint Mary's faculty. Students work with other current or retired dancers across all disciplines from all over the country. Small class sizes allow for individualized attention and ample networking opportunities.

Juilliard dancers have the ability to speak many dance languages and are grounded in ballet, modern, and contemporary techniques. They are also creative thought leaders who can deconstruct those techniques and develop their own original artistic voices to answer challenging questions through music, movement, and scholarly exploration.

The masking of the hand is continued with many scarves thatbedeck the dancers. Held within the right hand is a three-prongedwand called a palma. It represents the Trinitarian belief that God isone and three at the same time. In the Old World, St. Patrickexplained it by holding the triple-leafed shamrock out to the Druids. In the New World it is reflected as the triune god Quetzalcoatl ofMexico who is lord of the air, lord of the land, and lord of the waterat the same time.

As the history of the dance unfolded among the indigenoustribes of the New World, more symbolism was added to it. Theancient ogres called Abuelos, were brought in to keep order in thedance as well as to call out the movements to the dancers. Theyplayed the role of dance monitors called bastoneros. Part of theirduties also included keeping the dancers' ribbons nicely arrangedand keeping the spectators out of the arena. As the Abuelos tookon the traits of trickster figures, they also teased the sacrificial bullof the dance. 2351a5e196
