An international competition dedicated to films that represent the latest aesthetic and expressive trends, with special attention to debut films, young talents, indie features and lesser-known cinema.

Katie has been a Shorts Programmer at Sundance since 2010 and previously worked in short film distribution for Future Shorts and event production for Vimeo and Punchdrunk in New York. She is currently Video Commissioner for global video platform NOWNESS in London, commissioning editorial films and also overseeing short form content for fashion, design, tech & culture brands.

Sudeep is a Programmer for the Sundance Film Festival focusing on documentary feature films. Having started at Sundance in 2008 as a screener of international documentary features for the festival and a reader for the labs, he has previously been an Associate Programmer, Documentaries and Shorts Programmer. He is also Director of Programming for the Palm Springs International ShortFest where he has programmed since 2014. He has also worked in programming at many festivals including the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles, Aspen ShortsFest, LA Film Festival, AFI Fest, Tribeca, Indian Kaleidoscope Film Festival and was Director of Public Programming for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science. A native of New Jersey, Sudeep has a BA in English from George Washington University, MA and Ph.D. in Cinema and Media Studies from UCLA. He has taught film and television history, industry and criticism courses at universities throughout Southern California.

The Jacob Burns Film Center (JBFC) is a nonprofit cultural arts center dedicated to presenting the best of independent, documentary, and world cinema; teaching literacy for a visual culture; and making film a vibrant part of the community.

The Undergraduate Major in Cinema and Media Studies has been designed by faculty across the College of Arts and Humanities to enable students to explore the aesthetic, cultural, economic, historical, and technological dimensions of the most globally influential art forms of the twentieth- and twenty-first centuries. The Cinema and Media Studies major brings together courses in cinema and media from varied nations, languages, and cultures.

The Graduate Field Committee in Film Studies allows graduate students to study in their home department and include film studies faculty as advisors and committee members. Many Film Studies faculty are also members of the Graduate Program in Comparative Literature, which allows another avenue for graduate studies in cinema and media studies at the University.

The Program in Cinema and Media Studies is committed to the advancement of research and teaching on all aspects of cinema and media studies, and welcomes participation from across campus. The faculty maintain ties with colleagues across the U.S. and the globe, and regularly sponsor scholarly events at the UM campus. Cinema and Media Studies aims to promote a robust and vigorous intellectual event, and to create a scholarly home for the advanced study of cinema and media.

The Undergraduate Major in Cinema and Media Studies takes a capacious view of cinema and media studies, and allows students to choose classes among various areas: Cinema and Media Theory; Topics in National & International Cinema and Media; Documentary, Animation, and Experimental Media; and the study of Cinema Genres, Auteurs, and Movements. In addition, students can elect to add courses in digital media practice and film production.

Acclaimed as postwar Germany's first feminist film, Ula Stckl's The Cat Has Nine Lives disappeared from view shortly after its 1968 premiere when its distributor went bankrupt. Although it laid the groundwork for the flourishing feminist cinema that emerged in West Germany and beyond during the 1970s, Stckl's vibrant film long remained largely unknown. Yet it is as fresh and relevant today as it was when it debuted half a century ago. Stckl's film follows the intertwined stories of five characters to explore the possibilities for and limitations on women's subjectivity, desire, friendship, work, and artistic expression in a society defined by gender inequality. Restoring this singular film to its rightful place as a German film classic, Hester Baer argues that The Cat Has Nine Lives forms an important aesthetic and theoretical precursor to the unfolding cinefeminism of later decades.

Berkeley offers an innovative, interdisciplinary undergraduate program leading to a BA in Film & Media. This rich and diverse program offers rigorous engagement with the entire culture of moving-images in the larger context of humanistic studies, teaching students to think historically, theoretically, and analytically about a wide range of cinematic and para-cinematic forms. At the same time, it encourages students to look at moving-images from the vantage point of other disciplines.

The core courses for Film & Media majors include a two-semester sequence in the history of silent and sound film, a course on the documentary and the avant-garde film, a course in film theory, and a selection of courses on specific film genres, filmmakers, national cinemas and new media. Although film production is not a focus of this program, department electives include Digital Video and Screenwriting courses. Other production courses are also available in the Department of Art Practice and the Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies, which are affiliated with the Department of Film & Media in the Digital Media Labs Consortium, a cooperative effort to combine digital-media production equipment, labs, and courses of instruction.
