Think about the word 'modifier.' What part of the word do you know? How about 'modify'? What does it mean to modify something? To alter or change. A modifier makes changes to something, like adding a description. A young boy, a brown dog.
Problems occur when the modifier is in the wrong place in the sentence.
Take a look at the picture. What is the joke?
We, of course, know that the elephant was not in the man's pajamas. But because the modifier (in my pajamas) is next to the word 'elephant,' the grammar of the sentence states that the elephant is in the man's pajamas.
We could correct this sentence by moving the modifier and placing it next to the part of the sentence it is describing.
On morning, I was in my pajamas, when I shot an elephant.
