Hi everyone, can anyone advise on other sources of textures and 3D models for sketchup that have a good library of landscaping items? Things like trees, flowers (ideally named rather than generic) and textures for paving, gravel etc.

SketchUp Campus We have a great lesson on V-Ray Version 5 which includes a built-in library of high-quality (but low poly proxy) objects, including plants, that can be dropped into your renderings easily. Check it out. Let me know if you have any questions.

Sketchup Blocks Free Download Plants

I have only been working with the programme for a short time and currently there are several plants that immediately turn black when downloaded from the warehouse. See the example below. Who knows how to get these back to colour?

This is a great method, just a note that plants are sometimes constructed with nested interior groups or components, many times one component per leaf. In this case it may be necessary to explode everything inside the outer shell, to be able to select all the lines simultaneously.

On the sketchup side of things, I followed tips from the Sketchup Essentials Youtube channel. i.e. changing style to default, unchecked profiles, copy components rather than build them individually, purged etc.

Since I last posted here I have been trying to find lightweight 3d models of specific plants. I want to use specific plants, and representing the shade they cast on one another, requiring all plants to be switched on all the time.

I searched for the smallest models I could find for each plant, and then used Skimp add-on to reduce their polygon (face) count further, but when I started to assemble the garden, after only 200 plants, the model ground to a halt. I am expecting to place 1000 plants.

So I have been playing around with 1000 items of plants with differing polygon count. The limit seems to be around 340 polygons before it struggles to allow me to cast shadows and orbit, so I will probably shoot for more like 300.

There is no way you can place 1000 detailed 3D plant models in your SketchUp model without affecting performance. I would create hybrid 2D face-me plants with one subcomponent for plan views and another for viewing in 3D so the 340 faces coould be substituted by two.

Oh this is interesting, thank you! I often can squeak by with models that approximate the plant I need (tall, spiky foxglove substituted for tall, spiky black cohosh, for example) but my clients usually want to see detailed depictions of the true plants.

My background is in landscape as well and I know how hard it is to find good models (for free anyway). There are lots of good resources out there but keep in mind that plants in 3D, often have lots to parts (stems, leaves, flowers, etc). And these all add up in your model, affecting performance. The best option is to use a rendering extension - therefore sending the plant information directly to the renderer - freeing up the need to show all that detail in your model.

I personally like using Laubwerk - which comes with a plugin to help choose and select plant variety. For example, each Laubwerk plant comes with 3 varieties, 3 ages, and 4 seasons - which gives you 36 plant options per species. With 10 per bundle (comes at a cost of course) you get 360 plants available to you.

You could also check out FormFonts - FormFonts 3D Models & Textures - which is subscription based last I checked so it may end up being a better deal depending on your needs. These plants/models are also optimized for SketchUp so less needed for rendering extension.

What I would say is that models generally get painful quickly when you are using 3D plants - so I would consider using billboard plants or proxies via a rendering package that handles foliage better than SketchUp does.

The plants and RefNotes you've added to the Land F/X project associated with this drawing have been exported into SketchUp. The data reflecting the placement of the plants and RefNotes has also been exported.

1. The Land F/X Import dialog box lists all plants and Amenity RefNotes you've specified in the Land F/X project you're about to import. Each plant and RefNote's name will be listed below a box, which may or may not contain a symbol for that item.

SketchUp best practice is to limit the size of your model to about 1 square mile. You are likely working with a CAD drawing that covers an excessively large area, and your plants and/or blocks may be several miles (or several hundred or thousand miles) from the origin.

Hello there lovely SketchUp people,

Just wondering if there is anyone out there who is able to model realistic 3D plants?

My workflow is SketchUp to Enscape.

My first priority is Loropetalum chinense Purple Pixie and below I have attached a couple of reference images.

It would be awesome to hear from someone talentedĀ

Thanks so much in advanceĀ

I would like to add another possible solution to the request. Since many years I use the very effectivly established plant collection from dynascape. I was quite costly to aquire at first but it payed off soon enough because during designing a garden you wont need much time to search here and there for apropriate looking plants. The main reason above all is the very effectivlely kept size of the models. We all know that working with a heavily loaded model becomes a nightmare. So above all we have to make a decent aproach to time consumed during the process versus a convincing apperance of the result. I work with shaderlight to establish more photorealistic designs and the plant models behave reasonably well here too. Generally I went throgh them by redifining the saturation of colours, because they tend to be too strong. Most of the plans in the collection do have proper botanical names, else they are renamed in order to accomplish reliable tables by extracting the contents of a design into lists. Here is whre you find it:

DynaSCAPE | 3D Warehouse. Here you can see how they look in a typical design not rendered. 18900 Fam. Sesterhenn, Rengsdorf

or else rendered 10355-NB-11-Render-005-M30002000 4.52 MB

Otherwise, you are left to modelling them yourself. Since quality plants are difficult to model, and since each plant part needs multiple unique textures to look convincing when rendering, there are programs that help you model plants specifically. One example is SpeedTree.

In this model of a sweet potato plant (Sweet Potato | 3D Warehouse), I have a very low face count, but a high edge count due to the lines representing the plant stem. Will this similarly slow down my models when I have 1000 similar plants in my model, or is it all about the faces only?

Into LayOut you mean? Do you use Scrapbooks? When you say images, are you referring to the plant symbols themselves? They look like CAD blocks to me. What format are they in (ie PNG, EPS, DWG, etc)? Can you provide at least some screenshots of your SketchUp model and LayOut file?

Small- to medium-sized, slow-growing palm with an upright crown of gracefully drooping leaves. Showy, mostly upright growing, slender trunk, young stems green but turning gray to light brown with age. Dark green, feather-shaped, drooping fronds, which have a smooth, neat appearance. Small star-shaped flowers borne in pendulous axillary clusters of spikes. Small, ovoid fruits, dull red or maroon when ripe. Grows naturally only on the Lord Howe Island group, in the Tasman sea. One of the most widely used and most popular "house plants".

I am referring to models (plants) from the 3d warehouse. I download them and they are all dark. Oddly enough it even happens with models (plants) I have already downloaded on my computer in a file. Please advise

This plug-in no doubt can import sketchup model to CAD. But when the model is called in into the CAD software, the model scale is messed-up. So basically you can't do anything on the model except you have to re-draw again. But, I found in the sketchup software, you can actually to EXPORT the sketchup model into CAD model and the scale is still same from the original model.

I imported a 2021 Sketchup into AutoCAD 2023 and it works fine, no issues. It imports and turnes it into a block. I wish it would list all the blocks its importing, give us the option to choose which blocks to bring in, and also give us the option to smoothen meshes of some of selected blocks.

3D models and entourage elements are invaluable for creating realistic renderings and architectural visualizations, and they will take your projects to the next level. This covers everything from plants to trees, knick-knacks, furniture, people, and everything in between. Your project will impress based on its architectural beauty alone, but when you add these extra elements, your clients will really be able to see themselves in the scenes!

Trees and vegetation are important to ground your scene in reality, inside and out. Whether it is placing potted plants in the lobby of an office building, or adding trees to the exterior of your model, vegetation makes your scenes more dynamic and authentic. We are so used to seeing nature elements in our everyday lives that it is immediately apparent when they are missing from a rendering. Take a look at some of the websites below and find the plants that are just right for you.

Once again, the first place I'd recommend you check out is Enscape's own asset library for a collection of realistic vegetation that you can quickly insert straight into your models. So if you're looking for a Revit plant library (or such a collection for the other CADs mentioned above), then Enscape already has a vast array of beautiful plants ready to drop into your scenes. And for those wishing to see even more realistic landscaping and create vivid landscape renderings, with Enscape 2.9. animated vegetation is now available, so you can see your trees, plants, and grass moving!
