Join us for a fun-packed weekend on the shores of Smith Mountain Lake. Grab your friends and bring your knitting, weaving, spinning, crocheting, felting, or hooking projects!

- How does the lodging work?
Lodging will be in the lovely Reid Jones Jr. Lodge which has hotel-like rooms with two or three beds (including linens) and a private bathroom. For more information see: Location
2. What are the meals like?
Meals will be held in the main dining hall, located in the Smith Central Activities Building which is an easy walk across the street from our lodge. The meals we will be served are: dinner on Friday, brunch and dinner on Saturday, and brunch on Sunday. Brunch is served at 11:00 am, and dinner will be at 5:30. For more information about the dinning hall see: Location Our conference room includes a full working kitchen, so feel free to bring snacks to share! And bring a mug for coffee or tea (we don't like Styrofoam).
3. What does the cost of the weekend cover?
The cost of the weekend covers lodging (two nights, double occupancy), four meals, use of the spacious conference room, and a ton of fun! You will have access to miles of walking paths with beautiful views of the lake as well as free access to the Wiss Miniature Golf course. Each Skein Away will offer at least one optional structured event, and free mini-workshops. Stay tuned!
4. I will be traveling from far away; can I arrive the night before?
Of course! We will be offering an early check-in at 5:00 pm on Thursday, March 28th. Joining our Thursday Night Club (and getting the extra night) will cost $35 and must be part of your registration, Sheila (AKA Mummy) and Dorothea will be there Thursday night, for sure! We would love to have you join us for the evening! For more information on your hosts see: Hosts No meal with be served on Thursday night, so bring something to share and we can have a pot luck dinner.
5. Can I add the Thursday Night Club later?
Our registration does not allow additions once you have completed your registration. But we aren't that inflexible! If you find that you simply CAN'T miss out on the fun of an extra night email us and we will do what we can. The Thursday Night Club will sell out sooner than the rest of the event and once we fill up we can't take any more!
6. Will there be fiber vendors?
Yes, we have three vendors scheduled for the retreat. Additionally, there is one local yarn shop, as well as two more yarn shops within an hour of the 4-H camp.
7. How do I get time with the massage therapist?
Kelly will be providing a link for people who would like to signup and pay for 1 hour sessions (55 minutes of hands on) for $60, or 30 minutes sessions (25 minutes of hands on) for $30. We will be sharing that link with you closer to the event. Any unreserved time will be available on a first come, first served basis at the check-in desk when you arrive.
8. How does check-in and check-out work?
Thursday Night Club check-in starts at 5:00 pm on Thursday. Official check-in starts at 10:00 am Friday. At the check-in desk you will get your room assignment, schedule, and any other pertinent information. Check-out of the rooms is 10:00 AM Sunday morning, but you don't have to leave that early! We have the conference room until 3:00 pm! Plan to stay as long as you like!
9. What is the cancellation/adding policy?
If you find that life has taken a turn and you need to cancel your reservation email us and we will do what we can to help. NO cancellations will be accepted after 6:00 pm on March 11th, or earlier if the event sells out. If we fill to capacity we will put it up on the website, Facebook, and Instagram. Do not hesitate to email us if you have questions.
10. What else is in the area if I wanted to get away for a few hours?
Our 4-H camp in located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains on the edge of Smith Mountain Lake. We will be about 10 minutes away from the greater Westlake area, where there are shops, restaurants, and a movie theater. There are several breweries and wineries within a short drive. The Emerson Creek Pottery is nearby, Harvester Performance Center in nearby Rocky Mount offers regional and national live entertainment. For those interested in history there’s the Booker T. Washington National Monument, and the National D-Day Memorial, as well as the bright lights and big city thrills of Roanoke Virginia.
11. Can I bring my pet?
No, sorry, the 4-H rules prohibit guests from bringing their pets. If you have a service animal please contact us directly for an application.
12. Can I bring my children?
We consider this an adult event, and therefore children, of any age, would be out of place.
