- How does the lodging work?
Lodging will be in the lovely Reid Jones Jr. Lodge which has hotel-like rooms with up to three beds (including linens) and a private bathroom. We also offer a limited number of "Economy Singles" which are in another building (close by) and share a common bathroom (3 toilets, 3 showers). For more information see: Location
2. What are the meals like?
Meals will be held in the main dining hall, located in the Smith Central Activities Building which is an easy walk across the street from our lodge. Your event registration includes four meals: dinner on Friday, brunch and dinner on Saturday, and brunch on Sunday. Daytripper tickets include a variety of meals depending on the ticket chosen. Brunch is served at 10:00 am, and dinner will be at 5:30. For more information about the dinning hall see: Location Meals are cooked by the wonderful 4-H staff and are served buffet style. While not gourmet, the food is good, filling, and we don't have to cook it or clean up afterwards!! HOORAY! Our conference room kitchen includes an oven, a stove and a full sized refrigerator. Attendees are encouraged to bring snacks or additional food. And bring a mug for coffee or tea (we don't like Styrofoam).
3. What does the cost of the weekend cover?
The cost of the weekend covers lodging (two nights, double occupancy, towels and linens included), four meals, use of the spacious conference room, and a ton of fun! You will have access to miles of walking paths with beautiful views of the lake as well as free access to the Wiss Miniature Golf course. We try to offer at least one optional structured event, and some free mini-workshops. Stay tuned!
4. I will be traveling from far away; can I arrive the night before?
Of course! We will be offering an early check-in on Thursday, March 26th. Joining our Thursday Night Club (and getting the extra night) must be part of your registration, Sheila (AKA Mummy) and Dorothea will be there Thursday night, for sure! We would love to have you join us for the evening! For more information on your hosts see: Hosts No meal with be served on Thursday night and it's a long time till dinner on Friday so bringing something to share for a pot luck dinner on Thursday night and something yummy for Friday morning is encouraged.
5. Can I add the Thursday Night Club later?
Our registration does not allow additions once you have completed your registration. But we aren't that inflexible! If you find that you simply CAN'T miss out on the fun of an extra night email us and we will help you join the Thursday Night Club.
6. Will there be fiber vendors?
Yes, we have a number of vendors scheduled for the retreat. Additionally, there is our local yarn shop which sponsors the event, as well as another yarn shop within an hour of the 4-H camp.
7. How do I get time with the massage therapist?
Kelly will be providing a link for people who have registered and would like to signup and pay for 1 hour sessions (50 minutes of hands on). We will be sharing that link with registrants closer to the event. Appointments fill up QUICKLY and we STRONGLY recommend that you sign up as soon as you get the email. All appointments will be held on the 4-H campus.
8. How does check-in and check-out work?
Thursday Night Club check-in will start on Thursday afternoon. Main event check-in starts at 10:00 am Friday. At the check-in desk you will get your room assignment, class schedule, and any other pertinent information. Check-out of the rooms is 10:00 AM Sunday morning, but you don't have to leave that early! We have the conference room until 3:00 pm! Plan to stay as long as you can!
9. What is the cancellation/adding policy?
If you find that life has taken a turn and you need to cancel your reservation email us and we will do what we can to help. NO cancellations will be accepted after 6:00 pm on March 9th, or earlier if the event sells out. If we fill to capacity we will put it up on the website, Facebook, and Instagram. All refunds will be handled through checks mailed to you. Do not hesitate to email us if you have questions.
10. What else is in the area if I wanted to get away for a few hours?
Our 4-H camp in located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains on the edge of Smith Mountain Lake. We will be about 10 minutes away from the greater Westlake area, where there are shops, restaurants, and a movie theater. There are several breweries and wineries within a short drive. The Emerson Creek Pottery is nearby, Harvester Performance Center in nearby Rocky Mount offers regional and national live entertainment. For those interested in history there’s the Booker T. Washington National Monument, and the National D-Day Memorial, as well as the bright lights and big city thrills of Roanoke Virginia.
11. Can I bring my pet?
No, sorry, the 4-H rules prohibit guests from bringing their pets. If you have a service animal please contact us directly for an application.
12. Can I bring my children?
We consider this an adult event, and therefore children, of any age, would be out of place.
