- How does the lodging work?
Lodging will be in the lovely Reid Jones Jr. Lodge which has hotel-like rooms with two or three beds (including linens) and a private bathroom. For more information see: Location
- What are the meals like?
Meals will be held in the main dining hall, located in the Smith Central Activities Building which is an easy walk across the street from our lodge. Meals will be: Dinner on Friday, Brunch and dinner on Saturday, and Brunch on Sunday. For more information see: Location
3. What does the cost of the weekend cover?
The cost of the weekend covers two nights double occupancy, four meals, and a ton of fun! You get your lodging and meals, as well as the use of the spacious conference room for your fiber projects. You will have access to miles of walking paths with beautiful views of the lake as well as free access to the Wiss Miniature Golf course. Each Skein Away will offer at least one optional structured event, and might have professionally taught classes. Stay tuned!
4. I will be traveling for far away, can I arrive the night before?
Of course! We will be offering an early check in at 5:00 pm on Thursday, March 28th. Cost for the extra night is $48 (plus tax) and must be part of your registration, Sheila (AKA Mummy) and Dorothea will be there Thursday night, for sure! 5. Will there be fiber vendors?
Yes, we hope to have a minimum of three vendors at each event. These will be announced as they are confirmed. Additionally, there is one local yarn shop, as well as two more yarn shops within an hour of the 4-H camp.
6. How does check in work?
Official check in starts at 10:00 am Friday. There you will get your room assignment, schedule, and any other pretinent information. Check out of the rooms is 10:00 AM Sunday morning, but you don't have to leave that early! We have the conference room until 3:00 pm! Plan to stay as long as you like!
7. What else is in the area if I wanted to get away for a few hours?
Our 4-H camp in located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains on the edge of Smith Mountain Lake. We will be about 10 minutes away from the greater West Lake area, where there are shops, restaurants, and a movie theater. There are several breweries and wineries within a short drive. The Emerson Creek Pottery is nearby, Harvester Performance Center in nearby Rocky Mount offers regional and national live entertainment. For those interested in history there’s the Booker T. Washington National Monument, and the National D-Day Memorial, as well as the bright lights and big city thrills of Roanoke Virginia.
