The province of Colón is located on the Atlantic coast of Panama and has had a rich history since its founding in 1852. Its name is due to the navigator Christopher Columbus, who was the first to sight these lands during his fourth voyage to America in 1502. .

During the colonial era, Colón was an important port and center of trade in the Caribbean. However, due to constant attacks by pirates and privateers, in the 18th century it was abandoned and moved to the nearby city of Portobelo.
