If you want a high-volume, cost-effective solution for standard residential systems focused on general dust and pet dander control, choose Simply 18x18x1; if you need a specialized, expandable filter with superior MERV 13 particle capture for larger HVAC units requiring a custom fit, choose Safiair EXPXXFIL0020. Both options serve distinct roles in maintaining indoor air quality, but they are built for fundamentally different mechanical setups and filtration priorities. Whether you are managing allergens in a busy household or looking for a robust solution for snow removal equipment storage areas where heavy particulate matter is a constant threat, understanding the specific design architecture of each unit is the only way to ensure your system runs efficiently without risking damage to your furnace or AC coil.
• Simply 18x18x1: Offers a six-pack value for standard 18x18x1 slots with a focus on airflow efficiency and general dust/pollen trapping, making it ideal for frequent replacements in smaller residential units.
• Safiair EXPXXFIL0020: Features a unique expandable accordion design with MERV 13 synthetic media and metal mesh reinforcement, best suited for large 20x25x5 cavities where space-saving storage and high-grade filtration are critical.
• The Trade-off: You sacrifice the convenience of a bulk pack and standard pleated simplicity when choosing the specialized, single-unit expandable design of the Safiair, whereas the Simply filter lacks the ultra-high filtration rating needed for severe allergy management.
• Who Each Pick Is For: The Simply filter targets homeowners with standard central HVAC systems who prioritize ease of installation and consistent airflow, while the Safiair unit is engineered for owners of Bryant/Carrier cabinet systems who need a precise, high-performance fit that can be stored compactly before installation.
The Simply 18x18x1 Air Filter is designed for the vast majority of American homes that rely on standard central air conditioning and furnace systems. Its primary strength lies in its universal compatibility and the sheer volume provided in the packaging. Measuring nominally 18" x 18" x 1", the actual dimensions of 17.75" x 17.75" x 0.75" allow it to slide seamlessly into almost any brand of return grille or filter slot. This product is not about extreme filtration efficiency in terms of microscopic capture rates, but rather about balancing performance with airflow resistance. With a MERV 8 rating, it captures 90% of airborne particles like dust, mold spores, pet dander, and pollen. This level of filtration is perfect for everyday maintenance, keeping visible debris out of your ductwork and reducing the load on your system without choking the fan motor.
For the homeowner dealing with pets or seasonal allergies, this filter provides a solid baseline of protection. The advanced pleated technology used here features a higher pleat count than many retail alternatives, which maximizes surface area and optimizes airflow. This design choice means you get longer life—up to three months of resilient filtration—without compromising the breathing room of your HVAC unit. The fact that these filters are made in the USA using 100% American components adds a layer of reliability to the construction, ensuring the pleats hold their shape under pressure. If you have a family with dogs or cats shedding hair, or if you live in an area with significant outdoor dust, this filter does the heavy lifting required to keep your indoor air fresh and your system running smoothly.

However, this product is not for everyone. If you suffer from severe respiratory issues or require hospital-grade air purification, the MERV 8 rating may feel insufficient compared to higher-rated synthetic media options. Furthermore, because it comes in a six-pack, it requires storage space for the boxes and implies a commitment to a quarterly replacement schedule. It is also strictly for standard 1-inch filter slots; attempting to force this into a deep cavity meant for 4-inch or 5-inch media will result in poor sealing and bypassed air. It is a workhorse for general home maintenance, but it lacks the specialized engineering found in custom-fit solutions.
The Safiair EXPXXFIL0020 is a niche product built for a very specific type of HVAC infrastructure, primarily targeting owners of Bryant and Carrier cabinet systems that utilize the EZ-FLEX expansion mechanism. Unlike standard pleated filters that come pre-assembled, this unit features an expandable accordion-style design. Nominal dimensions are listed as 20 x 25 x 5 inches, but the actual size is 19.88 x 24.75 x 4.38 inches. This slight variance is typical for expandable units that must conform to various manufacturer tolerances. The defining feature here is the ability to unfold the filter at the creases, allowing it to adapt to the specific width of the filter slot while remaining compact enough to store in any corner of a garage or utility closet until installation day. This is a game-changer for those with limited storage space or for contractors managing multiple jobs.
From a filtration perspective, this is a serious upgrade over standard residential options. Built with premium MERV 13 synthetic media, it delivers superior particle collection capabilities compared to the MERV 8 alternative. Synthetic media is denser and more effective at trapping microscopic contaminants, including fine dust, smoke, and bacteria, which makes it ideal for environments demanding higher air purity, such as school classrooms, offices, or homes with severe allergy sufferers. The inclusion of a metal mesh backing is another critical detail; it prevents the filter from collapsing or damaging under strong winds, significantly extending the lifespan of the unit. While the nominal recommendation is a six-month replacement interval, the durability allows users to adjust this based on their specific living environment and usage frequency.
This product is exclusively for those who own compatible centralized HVAC systems requiring a 5-inch thick filter. It must be used with plastic guide rails, meaning it cannot be installed in a standard 1-inch return slot. The installation process involves unfolding the accordion structure and placing it into the designated guide rails, a method that ensures a tight seal and no air bypass. If you do not have a system designed for this expandable cartridge, this product is useless to you. It is a specialized tool for a specialized job, offering high-efficiency filtration in a package that prioritizes adaptability and long-term structural integrity over the convenience of a multi-pack bulk buy.
• Best for Standard Home Maintenance → Simply 18x18x1: If your system uses a standard 1-inch slot and you need a reliable filter for general dust and pet dander control, the Simply option is the straightforward choice.
• Best for High-Efficiency Filtration → Safiair EXPXXFIL0020: If you require MERV 13 performance to capture finer particles and have a system capable of housing a 5-inch deep filter, the Safiair unit offers superior protection.
• Best for Storage Convenience → Safiair EXPXXFIL0020: The expandable accordion design allows you to store the filter flat in small spaces, whereas the Simply 6-pack requires box storage and takes up significant shelf space.
• Best Value for Frequent Replacements → Simply 18x18x1: Buying in a six-pack reduces the per-unit cost and hassle for homeowners who replace filters every three months.
• Best for Durability Against Strong Airflow → Safiair EXPXXFIL0020: The metal mesh backing provides structural reinforcement that standard pleated paper filters lack, preventing collapse in high-velocity systems.
• Best for Compatibility with Major Brands → Safiair EXPXXFIL0020: Specifically engineered for Bryant and Carrier cabinet systems, ensuring a perfect fit where generic filters might fail to seal.
• Best for Airflow Efficiency → Simply 18x18x1: The lower MERV 8 rating combined with high pleat count ensures minimal restriction on airflow, protecting your fan motor from strain.
• Best for Snow Removal Equipment Storage (Specific Use Case) → Safiair EXPXXFIL0020: For storing snow blowers or plows in a garage workshop where fine particulate dust is prevalent, the MERV 13 rating helps keep the workspace cleaner, though both are viable depending on the HVAC setup.
In my opinion, the decision between these two products comes down entirely to your hardware. I would choose the Safiair EXPXXFIL0020 if I were upgrading a high-end HVAC system that supports 5-inch media, simply because the MERV 13 synthetic media and metal backing offer a level of protection and durability that a standard 1-inch filter cannot match. However, for the average North American home with a standard 18x18x1 slot, the Simply 18x18x1 is the smarter, more practical purchase. It strikes the perfect balance between capturing dust and pet dander without restricting airflow, and the six-pack format makes routine maintenance effortless. When it comes to cleaning up after snow removal activities in a garage, the Safiair's higher filtration grade is superior for trapping fine grit, but only if your system can physically accommodate it. Ultimately, pick the one that fits your slot and meets your filtration needs.
The Simply 18x18x1 is a MERV 8 filter that captures 90% of common particles like pollen and pet dander, which is good for general allergy relief. However, for severe cases, a higher MERV 13 filter like the Safiair EXPXXFIL0020 would be more effective at trapping microscopic allergens.
While the Simply filter is recommended for replacement every three months due to its 1-inch depth, the Safiair EXPXXFIL0020 is designed with durable materials and a larger surface area, allowing for a potential six-month replacement interval depending on your environment.
No, the Safiair EXPXXFIL0020 is a 5-inch deep expandable filter designed specifically for Bryant/Carrier cabinet systems with plastic guide rails. It will not fit in a standard 1-inch slot intended for filters like the Simply 18x18x1.
No, the accordion design allows the filter to be stored compactly but unfolds to provide the full 5-inch depth and surface area necessary for optimal airflow and particle capture with its MERV 13 synthetic media.
