What is the Knife Angel?
The Knife Angel, also known as the National Monument Against Violence & Aggression, is a 27ft tall, 6.5ft wide sculpture created entirely from seized blades. The Angel was specifically designed to create social change by helping to raise better awareness of how violent and aggressive behaviour effects our communities, by educating and encouraging youth to renounce violence as a means to solve problems, and by acting as a memorial for those lives lost to these unnecessary actions.
Angel Wings Project Daventry / Northants 2022
The project was originally initiated by Daventry City Council to complement the presence of the Knife Angel in Northampton and to foster unity and raise awareness about violent crimes across the UK. This initiative aimed to bring the community together in a powerful display of solidarity and reflection. I came across an invitation to contribute to this meaningful project when it was posted on the Daventry notice board page on Facebook. Eager to be involved and contribute to the cause, I immediately responded, driven by a deep sense of responsibility and connection to my community.
I soon learned that the council had not yet found an artist within the short timeframe to create the main wall piece and that they envisioned a striking mural of angel wings as a symbol of hope and resilience. Inspired by this vision and the urgency of the project, I quickly designed a large-scale rendering of angel wings on my computer and submitted it as a proposal. Alongside the design, I offered to volunteer my time and skills to bring the mural to life. Work began on Saturday, April 30th, and over the course of several intensive days, the mural was completed around 1 p.m. on May 6th, just a few hours before the start of the Daventry anti-violence event. Measuring approximately 7 meters in length and 3 meters in height, the piece became an eye-catching centerpiece that embodied the original Knife Angel project's spirit.
Having been a resident of Daventry for more than 20 years, this project held personal significance for me. I wanted to give back to the community in a way that was both meaningful and unexpected. I hope this mural will be cherished for many years to come, serving as a reminder of our shared commitment to unity and peace. The overwhelmingly positive feedback I have received from local residents reaffirms that the mural has succeeded in conveying its intended message and has made a lasting impact on our town.
