The Sigma Rho Fraternity is a Law-based fraternity that originated from the University of the Philippines Diliman College of Law and has been in continuous existence for more than 75 years. The Greek initials ΣP of Sigma Rho stand for the initials of Sanchez Roman, a Spanish jurist whose scholarly commentaries on the Civil Code of Spain were authoritative references used by the students of the UP College of Law. It is also part of Sigma Rho Philippines, a federation of independent fraternities born out of the same tradition. It attracts 40,000 current students and alumni members from all over the country. Fraternity members are called "comrades" and the chairman of the fraternity is called the "Grand Archon". It means the chief magistrate of ancient Greece.
Sigma Rho Fraternity & Delta Lambda Sigma Sorority Caraga Chapter was formally recognized at Father Saturnino Urios University formerly known as “Urios College” in the year 1970. Brod. Niceto “Boy” Agduying transferred from Los Baños and organized Sigma Rho Fraternity at Central Mindanao University in the year 1967 and was called the father of Sigma Rho Fraternity in Mindanao.
In the year 1970, one of his comrades Brod. Vicente Eballa organized Sigma Rho Fraternity & Delta Lambda Sigma Sorority at Father Saturnino Urios University (Urios College) in Butuan City. This was when the Rhoans & Lambdans started their greatness and were destined to lead and be known as one of the leading fraternities on the campus. As the years passed by, forever searching for Wisdom and Truth, always gentle in his ways and always ready to fight for what is right, expanded their greatness throughout the Caraga Region and produced quality members of almost 300 alumni.
SIGMA RHO FRATERNITY/DELTA LAMBDA SIGMA SORORITY strives to achieve its noble objectives and exercise its rights and privileges w/out reservation and purpose of evasion through sacrifice, loyalty, obedience, and service to the community.
To be the most respectable and recognized fraternity and sorority throughout the country by virtue of good Leadership, excellence, noble acts, and principles as “Seekers of the Right/Determined Light Seekers”.
The Sigma Rho Fraternity was formally organized by 12 law students of the University of the Philippines (U.P.) College of Law in 1938. It received formal recognition from the U.P. administration in 1939.
The two letters of the Greek alphabet are its emblems for the stature of its members as "Seekers of the Right". The Greek initials also stand for the initials of Sanchez Roman, a Spanish jurist whose scholarly commentaries on the Civil Code of Spain were authoritative references used by the students of the UP College of Law.
The Sigma Rho Fraternity recruits mainly students from the University of the Philippines College of Law and other colleges of the University of the Philippines. The head of the Sigma Rho Fraternity is called the Grand Archon, from the Greek word archos, meaning "Judge" or "Ruler“. Sigma Law was founded by charter members Pacifico Agcaoili, Constantino Borja, Rodolfo Freire, Joaquín González, Tiburcio V. Hilario, and George V. McClure (an American law student who was the first Grand Archon in 1939), Ángel Medina, Carlos Ramos, Luciano Salazar (later assisting Alexander Sichip in founding the law firm Sichip & Salazar), Antonio Morán Sison, Narceo Zambrano (who was the Grand Archon in 1940). The Charter Counselor was Magno Gatmaitan, Judge of the Court of Appeal after being a professor at the time. Its loyalty hierarchy is as follows: 1st is God, 2nd is Country, 3rd is Family, 4th is University of the Philippines, 5th is University of the Philippines Law School, 6th is Sigma Law. On the other hand, the vows are sacrifice, loyalty, obedience, and service.
The Sigma Rho Fraternity is not a single institution but a fusion of two entities - one among resident Brods in UP, and the other among alumni and non-resident Brods widely dispersed in the Philippines, USA, Europe, and other places who are of different ages, occupations, and political persuasions. They are held together as a close and united community of mutual help and support which even extend to immediate families. The rationale is that whoever they are and whatever they achieve are owing to their being Sigma Rhoans. Such bond has held currency in virtue of the Sigma Rhoans pledge of brotherhood - to stand by the side of any brother Sigma Rhoan. Upon that binding oath, the fraternity's worthiest lesson and message is its brand of friendship among all Brods - never deserting a friend in need. To serve a friend is to serve the Sigma Rho.
In 1957, Pete Quilano, a former UP Diliman law student, transferred to UP Los Baños. Among the 12 charter members are Brod. Augusto Samson and Brod. Balani Diaz.
In 1964, Brod Dic Togonon organized Sigma Rho Fraternity at Araneta University with 16 charter members. The first Sigma Rho fraternity was organized outside UP. Sigma Rho Fraternity of UP Los Baños sanctioned this move.
In 1967, the University of Iloilo(UI) and Western Institute of Technology(WIT) chapters were organized by Brod. Dennis Juanon from UP Diliman. There are now thousands of Rhoans and Lambdans in Iloilo.
In the year 1967, Brod. Niceto “Boy” Agduying from UP Los Baños transferred to Central Mindanao University(CMU) and organized Sigma Rho Fraternity. He is the father of Sigma Rho Fraternity in Mindanao.
In 1970, Brod Vicente Eballa organized Sigma Rho Fraternity in Father Saturnino Urios University(Urios College), Butuan City. That same year, three chapters were organized namely:
1. Cagayan Capitol College(CCC) by Brod Sammy Yañez from CMU

In 1977, Brod. Mark Marie Bantog and Brod. Jorge Madrio organized a Chapter at Mindanao State University (MSU) in Marawi City.
In 1978, Brod. Manuel Balaso from CMU organized the Bukidnon State College Chapter, still in 1978 Davao Chapter was organized.
National University (NU) was organized also by Brod Raffy de Castro of FSUU, Butuan City.
The Cebu Chapter was organized in 1978 by (7) seven Rhoans from different chapters in Mindanao.
In 1982, Brod. Edgar “Tepepa” Ferrer from FSUU organized the Ateneo de Zamboanga Chapter.

Now with revived chapters from Butuan and Cagayan de Oro, the Sigma Rho is a campus potential force. The Sigma Rho is a fraternity of destiny. History will ordain it for leadership.
The UP Delta Lambda Sigma Sorority traces its beginnings to the time when the country was coming out of war, through the vision shared by 33 pioneering women scholars of the University of the Philippines, who felt the need to recognize and enhance the vast potential of the Filipina. Hence, the Sorority was formally founded in April 1946.
From then on, there was no stopping the Deltans. The Sorority maintains an active and highly commendable presence within the campus. A nucleus and pulse of the student body, and yet responsive and sensitive to the pertinent issues and needs of the society. Through its achievements, it has attained a place potential of a potential great respect and esteem in the University. In 1982, it was given the Wenceslao Vinzons Award, by the University of the Philippines, a mark of distinction bestowed only to deserving Greek-letter organizations on campus. Until today, The UP Delta Lambda Sigma Sorority has been the only sorority that holds this award, and with due cause. The Sorority has also been awarded the Most Outstanding Organization in 1995 and 1996 by the University.
The Sigma Rho Fraternity and Delta Lambda Sigma Sorority Caraga Chapter commemorates its Chapter Founding Anniversary every year in March. One of their activities is gift-giving to the less fortunate individuals in the selected sectors of the Caraga Region. Giving relief goods to those areas affected by calamities and government-owned Lingap Centers needs support. Rhoans and Lambdans continues its services not only within the organization but also extended to the communities through the Sigma Rho Cares initiative.
Each year, alumnae reunite with their brothers and sisters at anniversaries and conventions and network of alumnae for all chapters, just because you graduated doesn't mean that you've lost your support system! The strength of our brotherhood and sisterhood even has alumnae is obvious through social networking groups and sharing brilliant ideas.
TREE PLANTING ACTIVITIES
On a bright and invigorating morning of June 15, 2024, the Sigma Rho Fraternity and Delta Lambda Sigma Sorority joined hands with senior citizens from the Holy Redeemer Parish for a tree-planting activity at the Taguibo Watershed Barangay Anticala, Butuan City. This significant event, held under the "Save Taguibo Watershed Project," was a collaborative effort involving the Knights of Columbus and coordinated by Father Saturnino Urios University.
The tree-planting initiative was more than just an environmental action; it symbolized the unity and shared responsibility among various community groups. The senior citizens of the Holy Redeemer Parish, deeply rooted in their commitment to environmental stewardship, spearheaded the event. They were supported by the Knights of Columbus, a fraternal organization known for its community service, and Father Saturnino Urios University, which has long been an advocate for sustainable environmental practices.
Sigma Rho Fraternity and Delta Lambda Sigma Sorority, both recognized for their active involvement in community service, were eager to contribute to this cause. The fraternity and sorority members, alongside the senior citizens and other volunteers, gathered at the Taguibo Watershed early in the morning, ready to take part in the vital task of planting trees.
The event commenced with an opening ceremony where representatives from the Holy Redeemer Parish, Knights of Columbus, and Father Saturnino Urios University addressed the participants. They emphasized the critical importance of the Taguibo Watershed in maintaining the city's water supply and ecological balance. The "Save Taguibo Watershed Project" aims to protect this essential resource from the threats of deforestation and environmental degradation.
Volunteers were organized into groups and assigned specific areas for planting. Members of the Sigma Rho Fraternity and Delta Lambda Sigma Sorority worked alongside the senior citizens, planting a variety of native tree saplings and fruit-bearing trees. These species are known for their durability and role in sustaining the watershed’s ecological health.
This tree-planting activity was not only about environmental conservation but also about fostering intergenerational connections. The involvement of senior citizens brought a wealth of knowledge and a deep sense of purpose, while the fraternity and sorority members contributed energy and a forward-thinking approach to sustainability. The collaboration highlighted the importance of learning from the past while building a better future.
Members of the Sigma Rho Fraternity and Delta Lambda Sigma Sorority expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to participate in such a meaningful project. They were inspired by the dedication of the senior citizens and committed to continuing their efforts in promoting environmental sustainability.
The event concluded with a sense of achievement and hope for the future. The newly planted saplings, taking root in the Taguibo Watershed, symbolize the commitment of the community to protect and preserve their environment. This tree-planting activity under the "Save Taguibo Watershed Project" serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that collective action can have on creating a sustainable future.
The ongoing "Save Taguibo Watershed Project" continues to receive support from various community members and organizations. Sigma Rho Fraternity and Delta Lambda Sigma Sorority's participation in this event underscores their dedication to environmental causes and their willingness to collaborate with other groups for the greater good.
As the fraternity and sorority members look forward to future community engagement opportunities, they remain steadfast in their commitment to environmental advocacy and the promotion of sustainable practices. The tree-planting activity at the Taguibo Watershed has not only contributed to the environmental restoration of the area but also strengthened the ties between the university community and local residents, paving the way for continued collaboration and positive change.
THE FINAL RITES
The initiation rites of Sigma Rho Fraternity and Delta Lambda Sigma Sorority of the Caraga Chapter, held on February 24, 2024, were marked by a profound display of commitment and tradition. The event, known as the Final Rites, is a significant ceremony in the organization's culture, encapsulating the fraternity's and sorority's values and solidarity.
The Final Rites are an essential part of the initiation process for Sigma Rho and Delta Lambda Sigma. This ceremony signifies the culmination of a challenging journey for the initiates and their official acceptance into the fraternity and sorority. The rites from "Sunset to Sunrise" symbolize a rebirth, where the darkness of night gives way to the dawn, representing the new beginnings for the initiates.
As dawn breaks, the new members are celebrated and welcomed into the fraternity and sorority. This final act of the ceremony is a moment of joy and pride, as the Masters and Elders embrace the new Two (2) Sigma Rhoans as part of their esteemed brotherhood and sisterhood. The bonds formed during the rites are expected to last a lifetime, rooted in shared experiences and a deep understanding of the fraternity's traditions.
The Final Rites are not just an initiation ceremony but a cultural event that reinforces the values and unity of Sigma Rho and Delta Lambda Sigma. It strengthens the ties between members and fosters a sense of belonging and commitment to the fraternity's and sorority's principles.
