About Me

Hi, my name is Siddharth Jaiswal and I am a 2nd year Ph.D student at IIT Kharagpur, in the Dept. of Computer Science, working in the area of Fairness and Bias in AI with Prof. Animesh Mukherjee.

Prior to this I was a Technical Project Lead at Huawei Technologies, India, working with the Cloud & AI team on Big Databases, focusing on query optimization and database connectors.

I completed my M.Tech(Research) degree from Dept of CDS, IISc, Bengaluru, India. During my time at IISc, I was associated with DREAM Lab working on distributed graph algorithms. I was also a recipient of the Microsoft Data Science Fellowship for the duration of my degree.

I completed my B.Tech in Computer Science and Engg in 2016 from Tezpur Central University, Tezpur, Assam, India.

I play football and volleyball and am a huge supporter of Manchester United FC. I like photography, reading books and writing poetry. Albert Camus, Ruskin Bond and Khaled Hosseini are some of the authors whose works I love.

Academic Updates

I have been awarded the Prime Minister's Research Fellowship(PMRF) in the December 2021 cycle!

I e-attended the 1st Greek ACM-W Chapter Winter School on Fairness in AI on 24th & 25th February, 2022!

My submission to ACM CHI 2022 Case Study track- "Marching with the Pink Parade: Evaluating Visual Search Recommendations for Non-binary Clothing Items" has been accepted for publication as an extended abstract!

  • In this work, we studied visual search recommendations on e-commerce platforms through human surveys and identified that these platforms perform poorly for non-binary clothing items. The participants rated the non-binary recommendations lower and the male raters were more inclined to make binary choices as compared to female raters.

  • The preprint is available now!

  • Presentation video can be found here!

My first paper as part of my Ph.D has been accepted for publication at ICWSM 2022- "Two-Face: Adversarial Audit of Commercial Face Recognition Systems".

  • In this work, we performed an audit of commercially available Facial Recognition Systems for noisy input images and identified that the disparity in accuracy increases manifold against people of color.

  • The preprint is available now!

I graduated with a degree of M.Tech(Research) from the Dept. of CDS, Indian Institute of Science, with the convocation being held virtually on 6th October, 2021.

I have started my doctoral studies at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India, in the area of Fairness in AI Systems, in January, 2021.

I successfully defended my M.Tech(Research) thesis, titled "Streaming Partitioning and Distributed Analytics on Large Graphs" in June, 2020.

I have joined Huawei Technologies India Pvt. Ltd. as a Technical Project Leader in March, 2020.

I visited Riken Centre for Computational Science in Kobe, Japan to attend the 2nd R-CCS International Symposium and the 4th International Youth Workshop from 17th-20th February, 2020! I also got an opportunity to present a poster on my work on "Streaming Graph Partitioning". Check out the presentation our group made. Do keep a lookout for next year's applications!

My first paper accepted at HPBDC 2019 (co-located with IPDPS 2019, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)! Read it here. Slides from my presentation are available here.
