Restoring your swing shutters is not a difficult operation in itself, and it saves money on the purchase of new shutters that might turn out to be weaker and less attractive than the ones you have. How to properly restore your swing shutters?

At what period, and how to remove them from their bindings?

Your shutters (whether wooden, traditional ...) must be maintained regularly. We do not mean by that, every month, but because they are regularly subjected to bad weather (wind, snow, sun, rain), it is important to renovate them every 5 years. You must also take into account the climate of your place of residence: by the sea, the shutters are damaged much faster. Having said that, care should be taken that the wood does not crack or blister, and start thinking about renovating after 2-3 years. For that, you will have to unhinge your shutters, a rather simple operation. The DIY Aluminium Shutters are held by hinges: they will therefore simply have to be lifted. Some can be fixed by an English hinge. In this case, either you unscrew your hinge, or you renovate your shutters on site,

The basic material

Using brushes, a painter's knife, scrapers, a sanding block and a vibrating sander, you will spread the chemical stripper, the treatment product you have chosen, the wood filler, the stain and rust lacquer. The shutters must be covered evenly, so as not to be more pickled and treated on one side than the other. Do not forget to put on gloves, because these products are extremely toxic. They can go so far as to cause lesions on the skin. Working outdoors is essential as the vapors from the materials are very dangerous for the lungs. In addition, after covering the ground to protect it, let your products act for at least a quarter of an hour.

Strippers and wood filler?

Strippers are still just as bad for the human body, although they are much less so than before. However, their effectiveness is no longer to be proven. The old paint goes away very quickly under the action of the stripper. With a spatula, all you have to do is scrape off the paint that is starting to blister, don't forget the nooks and crannies, and voila! Presented in gel, liquid or aerosol form, you will choose the stripper that best matches your surface. As for wood paste, it is not there to remove the paint, but to repair imperfections in the wood, and prevent bad weather from continuing to eat away at it. Once the wood filler has been applied, wait for it to dry before sanding. The wood of the shutter will therefore be smooth and uniform. These past stages, All you have to do is stain the shutters, and you will have a brand new pair of shutters. This is the renovation of equipment!
