I'm currently shooting with a t5i and looking to upgrade to a full frame body. For this potential camera, I would primarily be shooting landscapes and portraits in various lighting conditions (with the preference of lower noise at ISO 1600+ for handheld shooting at night). I've been considering the 6D Mark II and the 5D Mark III for those situations and I believe I've reached the conclusion that the 5D would be the better choice overall. With that being said, the price being offered by Canon for refurbished 5D Mark IIIs is pretty appealing. However, I don't want to run the risk of paying that much for a camera that already has a 100,000+ shutter count. Is there anything on Canon's site that indicates shutter count on any bodies in their refurbished stock? If not, I'll most likely look elsewhere since I would prefer to know exactly what I'm getting.

Conversely, cameras with low numbers may be newer or less used models. When purchasing a used Canon camera it is essential for photographers to research its prior usage by looking at its current shutter count. This will provide insight into how much wear and tear there may have been and what condition it could potentially be in now.

There are two main methods for retrieving information from a Canon Camera; through built-in Canons menus, or by manually analyzing segments of code called exif data which is saved onto images taken with some modern DSLRs such as those made by canon themselves. Accessing these menus requires detailed technical knowledge and experience but provides more accurate results than checking EXIF data which can often be misleading due to mislabeled files or corrupted data caused during transfer processs making it difficult for beginner photographers who want reliable results without having too dig deep into understanding complex codes .

2023 Shutter Count. All Rights Reserved. We help you find and check your camera's shutter count or shutter actuation number. To understand the usage and the shutter life expectancy of your camera.

Hello guys,

Just want to know whether on a EOS 20d, there is a way to find out how many shutter clicks the unit has been through ?

This is good to know if one is offering a 2nd hand camera for sale.

Or if one is in the store, one would know whether the camera is a demo or new unit.

I know this sounds lame, but i'm curious if such is possible.

No, it is not possible for a user to get the real number. Peter is wrong and this has been proven. Only Canon can access the shutter count, you can ask them to read it for you when you give them your camera for maintenance.

Last 6 months I shot 2675 pics, and the count also increased with this number...also, the total number seems more or less reliable, although I don't know the exact number of pics made...but it won't be far off....

Kasper, I know for sure that the hex editor method is wrong. It may show something connected to shutter actuations, but it definitively is not correct in giving you the total number. I (and several other posters) noted this in the thread Peter linked above.

Canon don't define shutter life; they just state so many operations. Life is often defined as the number of operations exceed by 90% of a sample. In Canon's case it's more likely to be the number of operations exceeded by 50% of a sample, roughly equivalent to an average life. It is often measured using accelerated life testing which does not exactly replicate normal operation.

The average life of a large number of shutters may be 50,000 operations. Individual shutters may fail at 5,000 operations, or one may go on to 100,000 operations. It depends on the physical properties of the phosphor bronze material, manufacturing tolerances, differences in bend radii and surface finish.

But just for you, I did the exact procedure (with exactly the same XVI32 editor) as descriped in that weblog for one of my recent RAW files and it gave me the number of "shutter actuations" of 26865. This is 100% wrong, I am sure that the shutter click count is somewhere around 80,000 -- possibly higher. If you like the number the program gives you, cuddle it, hug it, but don't believe that it is anywhere near the true shutter count. As I said, other people have noted this, too.

And you can well see, all shutters are different. As Henry said, it is impossible to say when a specific shutter will fail -- they are not built to break down after 50,000 shots, only that Canon has rated and more or less gave you warranty that the shutter is built to last this number of shutter actuations. It may fail earlier or last a lot longer.

My camera has seen use in tropical typhoons and freezing snowfall, at the beach, in humid jungle and busy city streets. I photographed violent rallies, children birthdays, sport events, casual portraiture and wild parties. My 20D has been dropped twice and looks like a real workhorse with lots of scratches and missing paint ("patina", as Leica aficionados say) -- but it is still going strong and has never shown any issues. I am prepared to replace it anytime because I know that electronic things are not going to last forever, but as long as it works, I will shoot with it regardless of the number of shutter clicks.

I am preparing some ads for our club to sell surplus equipment one item of which is a Canon 20Da. I have tried to discover the shot count but to no avail. It is not in the EXIF data as far as I can ascertain. While I am at it, I have the same problem with a Canon 10D. I made sure I was shooting JPEGs. Is there a way to determine shot counts for these? Thanks in advance.

Several of the programs I use to edit images will show shutter count, so I tried a couple of images from one of my photographers that uses a Cannon mirrorless and the software shows the count at zero.

I am trying to find the shutter count using Photoshop Elements 14. My previous version 11 provided this information at File\File Info...\Advanced\Schema\aux: Image Number, but version 14 doesn't seem to have the Advanced tab. Can anyone tell me where to find the shutter count in version 14? Thank you!

In the most simple terms shutter count is the amount of photos that a camera has taken. Every time a camera takes a photo it has a mechanical shutter actuation which exposes the image; unless you are using a mirrorless camera on a silent shooting mode (or a mirrorless with no mechanical shutter). Shutter count is the number of times that the shutter actuation takes place.

So, the first thing I thought a potential buyer of a camera might want to know is the shutter count. It is kind of the milage of the camera. Mechanical shutters have a maximum life expectancy that is published by the camera manufacturer. My Canon EOS R5 has an impressive shutter life of 500,000 actuations. That is a lot even for a professional camera body. Compare that to the shutter rating of the Nikon D850 with a mere 200,000 shutter actuations.

Searching the Internet showed that others had similar issues. One solution was to purchase the ShutterCount application for Mac OS, which I did. I had tried some online shutter count sites but none worked. Nor did some free apps I tried. I paid somewhere around $8 for the app.

Canon 450D (Canon EOS Rebel XSi) 's shutter life is about 50,000 actuations. But it's not an exact match, it can failed at 25.000 or continue to working great after 100.000 actuations. It's just an average.

Free Shutter count is not dependant of the numbering system of your sdcard. Free Shutter count try to reveal the real shutter actuation number stored in the firmware of your camera. If you notice that Free Shutter Count is incompatible with your camera, please contact us and help us improve compatibility.

Would you consider buying a used canon 5d Mark II in mint condition with 120 000 shutter actuations for 500$? The seller is a nice lady, she is a professional phototographer. Here are some photos of the camera that she has sent me.

I tend to equate shutter click counts with car mileage. To me, your question's equivalent car shopping question is: Would you buy a 2008/2009 used car with 120,000 miles on it for 1/5 of what it went for new?

Based on a Kaplan-Meier statistical analysis of the submitted data, you have about a 3 in 4 chance of making it to between 250,000 and 500,000 and a 2 in 3 chance of making it to between 500,000 and 1,000,000 actuations. There's only about a 1 in 8 chance that the shutter will fail at between 100,000 and 150,000 actuations. Canon rates the shutter of the EOS 5D Mark II at 150,000 actuations.

The reason why there is so much software for Canon shutter actuations is because they don't/didn't include it in the exif and indeed, third party software only works in a limited number of later Canons. The Magic Lantern software typifies how much extra capabilities Canons have but that are hidden by the manufacturer (raw video for one).

There IS a service menu for the M10 for sure with the shutter actuations number, I have already posted a picture of it here from a M10-P camera, but it must be one of Wetzlar's best kept secrets. Here it is one more time. The guy who knows how to enter will not tell me.

If one puts all of their images into the same Lightroom catalog, then you can filter by attribute (camera model) and get a pretty rough idea of how many images have been taken (if the camera new to you of course). It won't give LV openings or shutter test shots, but those shouldn't be much in comparison to pics taken (I would hope).

I will have to be a party pooper here.

My M10-R BP came with 9xxx image count brand new out of the box, I have a 4 digit numeral set up in my camera file name (M10RXXXX.dng) and have rotated that to four zeros at least three times (I have shot over 30K images with it since last July when it came out) plus I do not use live view (maybe 1%).

The total image count for my camera as shown by this app is just 14638, which is absolutely way too little. So unfortunately, even though the app is a really awesome wireless download powerhouse, its image count has zero credibility for me.
