About Me
I am an Assistant Professor in Department of Computer Engineering at the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM), Dhahran, KSA. Before joining KFUPM I was a Senior AI Scientist at Digital Technology & Innovation, Siemens Medical Solutions USA, Inc. I did my Ph.D. under the mentorship of Prof. Jong Chul Ye at Bio Image Signal Processing & Learning (BISPL) Lab, Department of Bio and Brain Engineering, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Daejeon, South Korea in 2022. Before my Ph.D. studies, in 2012, I joined the Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology, Iqra University, Karachi. and from 2016 to 2018 I was a Researcher with Synergistic Bioinformatics (SynBi) and Bio Imaging, Signal Processing Learning (BISPL) Labs, Bio and Brain Engineering Department, KAIST. I have also worked as a Lecturer and Teaching Assistant for number of graduate and undergraduate courses. Besides my studies, I enjoy cooking, reading books, taking photos of nature and traveling. I also do poetry in my native language (Urdu) and maintain a Youtube channel "https://www.youtube.com/@azaim" which is based on the poerty collection of my late grandfather Azam Akberabadi.
My research interests include machine learning, optimization, inverse problems, and signal processing with a special emphasis on biomedical and bioinformatics applications. I have also served as a Topic Editor and Reviewer for some top-ranked journals including IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging, IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems, IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, etc. [SEE FULL LIST].
I have over 10 years of experience in machine learning and medical imaging. I have worked on a number of projects related to medical image reconstruction, denoising, and super-resolution. I had a pleasure of working with highly talented people, and I managed to publish multiple national and international patents, and number of good papers in reputable conferences and journals including MICCAI, ISBI, IEEE-TMI, IEEE-TUFFC, IEEE/ACM-TCBB and IEEE-TNNLS, etc. I am an active participant of MICCAI, IUS, ISBI and SPIE conferences and have presented number of oral presentations and poster papers [SEE FULL LIST]. I am self-motivated and a passionate learner and based on my academic performance in 2019 I was awarded with BISPL's best researcher award.
