Color guard is the visual performance section of the marching band. While the winds and percussion create the musical sound, the color guard helps bring the show’s story, emotion, and style to life through movement, dance, flags, rifles, and other visual equipment.
A strong color guard adds color, motion, and expression to the field. They help the audience understand the mood of the music by matching the energy of the show, whether it is powerful, graceful, dramatic, playful, or emotional.
What They Do
Color guard performers combine dance, choreography, equipment work, and marching skills. During a show, they may spin flags, toss rifles, move across the field, perform dance features, and interact with the music in a visual way.
Their role is important because they help shape what the audience sees. A marching band show is not only heard; it is also watched. Color guard helps turn the music into a full performance.
What members have to say:
"I love getting to build something beautiful out of basically nothing, just skill and talent."
- Lily Koenig, 2-time color guard member
How Can I Join?
You can fill out the form here.
OR
Toward the end of the school year, flyers are posted throughout Sequoyah with QR codes you can scan.
Joining color guard usually starts by attending an interest meeting, clinic, or audition hosted by the marching band program. These events are designed to teach you the basics, so you do not need to already know how to spin a flag or dance before showing up.
At clinics, you may learn simple flag technique, basic movement, marching fundamentals, and a short routine. The goal is not to be perfect right away, but to show that you are willing to learn, stay focused, and keep trying even when something is new.
