Liquids/Solutions

We are studying the dynamics of liquids/solutions including simple molecular liquids, ionic liquids, polymer solutions, and so on using fs-RIKES.

We are also synthesizing novel functional fluids and characterize their liquid properties, such as viscosity, surface tension, density, and electrical conductivity.

Functional Fluids

Ionic Liquids

Ionic liquids are molten salts at room temperature (or sometimes defined as less than the boiling point of water).

Ionic liquids are less flammable, so they can be safe liquid materials.

Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs)

Deep eutectic solvents are liquids at room temperature but composed of components with individual melting temperatures much above room temperature.

An example shown here is a mixture (center) of urea (right-hand side) and choline chloride (left-hand side).

Highly Electrical Conductive DESs

We found some imidazolium iodide mixtures with iodine can easily become liquid. A mixture shows a very high electrical conductivity, as high as ~70 mS/cm.

Photos on the right hand side (from up to down) show that an imidazolium iodide (mp: ~80℃) white powder turns to be liquid within about 10 seconds when iodine (mp: ~114℃) is added.
