Colors and Clouds
— Current Perspectives / Painting —
Colors and Clouds is a painting series in which images of hands and feet—manifestations of Interconnectedness—emerge from the accidental interplay of color, line, and form. Drawing from the hands and feet depicted in ukiyo-e shunga, the series seeks to visualize the invisible network of connections through which the world is continuously formed.
Rather than depicting predetermined images, Kaneko responds to coincidental elements that arise on the canvas. Colors, lines, and shapes are placed without a fixed outcome, and through acts of seeing and drawing, fragments of human presence gradually appear. In this process, perceptual bias—assumption, misinterpretation, and projection—functions not as an error, but as a generative force.
In Colors and Clouds, the emphasis lies not on the completion of an image, but on the process through which Interconnectedness is read, shaped, and expanded within painting. Chance, perception, and action continually interact, revealing how the world comes into being through relational processes.
An excerpt from the Colors and Clouds series, where color and line give rise to emergent forms of Interconnectedness—hands and feet drawn from shunga.
