SHIFT
Sustainable Humanitarian Innovation For Transformation
SHIFT is a programme funded by the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), delivered by Save the Children UK in collaboration with Save the Children Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Türkiye, and Northwest Syria. It is a transformational humanitarian response led by the Humanitarian Leadership Academy and delivered with the Innovation Hive, Alameda, ACAPS, Cash Collaborative Delivery network (CCD), and partners.
SHIFT stands for Sustainable Humanitarian Innovation for Transformation, which describes our common approach to delivering a humanitarian response:
Fostering sustainable transformational changes to achieve system-wide impact
Applying innovative approaches in supporting local solutions
Focusing on progressive localisation and capacity strengthening
Empowering diverse actors within the humanitarian eco-system.
To achieve this, collectively, we provide:
learning resources and trainings
coaching and mentoring
research and analysis
cash and voucher assistance
grants
other bespoke non-financial support, including professional advice and services.
WE ARE CURRENTLY SUPPORTING TWO HUMANITARIAN RESPONSES
ABOUT OUR APPROACH
To deliver SHIFT programme, we adopted the Engine 2 approach.
The funding raised by the DEC enabled an opportunity to implement a two-level humanitarian response for Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal and Türkiye-Syria Earthquake Appeal. This means combining traditional approach to aid programmes (Engine 1) with additional initiatives that address systemic shortfalls in the humanitarian system (Engine 2).
Engine 1 approach focuses on direct assistance and humanitarian relief activities such as:
Emergency shelter
Sanitation and hygiene
Health and nutrition
Child protection
Education in emergencies
Engine 2 focuses on capacity strengthening and embraces a whole-society approach - delivering learning on how to share power and exploring relationships between all actors helps to achieve system-wide impact. It is the sustainable, transformational change that aims to champion progressive localisation, genuinely supports local solutions, and recognises the diversity of actors within the humanitarian eco-system.
